Look at that smile!! Meet Atlas. This big handsome 3 year old boy was rescued in the nick of time from a New Mexico shelter. He’s likely a BC mix with something we can’t quite put our finger on! We don’t know much about his past, but aren’t sure it’s such a good one. But Atlas is doing his best to roll with all the changes in his life and is ready for a new start!
Goofy Atlas can be a big snuggly, loving, affectionate guy with his human family. He likes to sit on the foot of his foster mom, and will bury his head into you for cuddles. He loves being a part of whatever his family is up to and will follow his people around the house. He’s usually pretty social and outgoing with strangers, but is not 100% confident and does find the occasional person frightening….usually men…and can be a little defensive and slow to warm up to them. Atlas can be pretty playful with the right dog – he prefers females although he does just fine with really agreeable male dogs as well. He is starting to enjoy toys. His herding instinct unknown but he just cannot live peaceably with cats, so a feline-free home is essential for Atlas. He is pretty happy out and about in the world and cuts a striking figure! He’s ready to go go go after relaxing home all day while his foster mom is at work. But overall he’s just a moderate energy fellow and with just a good bit of exercise, Attie is satisfied to settle down and hang out.
In addition to his winning smile, Atlas already has some skills to boast about – he’s housetrained and can go a regular work day without accidents in his foster home. Instead of hanging out in a crate, he chills in the laundry room without complaint and he has not chewed on anything inappropriate at all!! He walks nicely on a leash and is starting on the basics. Atlas will need adopters willing to continue with his basic manners training, as well as building his confidence and comfort around men. Like many dogs, Atlas also has bad associations with having his collar grabbed, and will need help learning that having his collar grabbed means great things like treats, too. The good news is Atlas is super food motivated which means he is a fun kiddo to train!
All in all, Atlas is a nice young lad who had a rough start. He will be happiest in a home where he can be a beloved family member with dog-experienced adopters who have the time and energy to help Atlas become the wonderful canine citizen we know he can be! In return, Atlas will deliver a lifetime of love, laughs, and devotion.
Atlas is neutered, up to date on shots, and living in a loving foster home near Highlands Ranch, CO.
