My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 10/26/13!!!

One-year-old Kieran was adopted as a puppy by someone who did not realize that puppies grow up to be “dogs”. And sadly, when he was just a few months old, Kieran was surrendered to a shelter in AL. The shelter then placed this bundle of energy with an 80-year old woman. Realizing that a dog with this amount of energy was too much for her, his elderly owner brought him to her daughter’s house to stay with her and her dog. While this might seem like a good solution, Kieran and his buddy were kept in a small pen as “outside dogs.” The dogs yearned to be with people and kept escaping from the yard to find friends. Rather than bringing the pups into the home, they brought Kieran to an Alabama shelter.

Although not much training came his way in his former life, Kieran knows some basic commands like “sit” and “paw.” He does need to be reminded of his manners, not to jump up, and to walk nicely on a leash. But because this boy loves to please, he should respond to directions fairly quickly – he just needs someone to consistently show him what he should and should not do. Enrollment in obedience class for Kieran and his new owner is a requirement for his adoption. Since he is a VERY energetic boy, an active owner and a fenced yard are also on Kieran’s wish list.

One of our volunteers in AL recently spent some time with Kieran and observed that this boy is just starved for affection. While he wanted to chase the tennis ball that Lisa threw for him, he wanted to be close to her to be petted and loved even more! When she leashed him for a walk, he took the leash in his mouth and pranced around proudly. Lisa says he is one of the most magnificent red Goldens she has ever seen – and she has seen A LOT of Goldens! Kieran’s former owner had him shaved in the summer, but his coat is growing in nicely and he will turn heads when he goes walking with his new owner. Kieran is incredibly spirited and greets everyone he meets with a happy smile and lots of kisses! He is amiable to other dogs, but may be too excitable for households with cats. He enjoys children, but with his size (75 lbs) and zest for life, he could easily knock over a toddler.

Kieran should be thought of as a one-year old puppy with a “Happy, happy, joy, joy” attitude! Whoever adopts this boy, will have an awesome companion as he matures and receives direction, love, and affection. If you are looking for a loyal companion who will follow you everywhere then, Kieran is the guy for you. Kieran is up-to-date on his vaccinations, heartworm negative, and neutered. All he needs is a place to lay his handsome head and to know that he is home, forever.

We can only consider applications for young dogs from folks who are home most of the day. If you have lots of love and time to dedicate to Kieran, he will repay you with a lifetime of devotion!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
