My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Odin and he is an 8mth old male Border Collie/ Australian Cattle Dog mix that was an unclaimed stray at the pound. We were drawn to Odin’s nice nature and happy disposition. He was very dirty and needed a good bath and many brushings to get him clean and tidy. He was good for his bath although he didn’t love it, but he does love being brushed and sat patiently for every session it took to get him looking great.
Odin is a mix of two herding breeds so he is an active, athletic, and very smart working dog that needs a home that will exercise him sufficiently and train him well. He is food motivated and responds well to positive reinforcement training with food rewards and praise. Odin really tries to please so he thrives on being praised for good behaviour. He would be a great dog for anyone interested in pursuing obedience training past the initial level, or for someone looking for a dog to compete in dog sports with. Working dogs need to have things to do to be happy and fulfilled so we are looking for a family for Odin that will keep him busy and active. He requires daily exercise and it is best if it is running exercise or lengthy walks. He loves trail walks and hikes. He would be a great jogging partner but if his family does not include a runner than play sessions in the yard would be appreciated. Odin will require a large fenced yard where he can play and run around. He is calm in the home as he is sufficiently exercised in his foster home. He will settle down to chew on a chew toy or nap, but the minute you get up he is up and ready for whatever you might want to do. Odin will follow you from room to room as your constant companion. He wants to participate in whatever you are doing and get such a sad look on his face when you tell him to wait behind. Odin likes to divide his inside time between being in the room right with you, or, lying in the entranceway, keeping an eye on things. Odin finds it his mission to always know what is going on and in true working dog fashion he is always on duty, even when on break.
Odin is being fostered in a home with other dogs of all sizes. He is great with every dog he meets so far and loves to play with other dogs. He would do well in a home with another young and playful dog that likes running as Odin likes chasing. He’s not much into wrestling as he prefers running, but will wrestle some. He would do equally well being the only dog, getting all the attention, and having some dog friends to play with. He is also being fostered with cats and he is not aggressive with them, but he is overly interested in their smells which really bug the cats as he noses them and sniffs them heavily. He will chase a cat that runs from him as he is a herding dog and is all about chasing running creatures. We would recommend Odin not go to a home with cats unless it is an older cat that is well adjusted to dogs and will not run from him. Odin is not being fostered with children and although he is a friendly and happy boy, he is an active, young herding dog and would not be a good fit in a home with young children. We would recommend any kids in the home be over 12 years old as Odin will get too excited around the running and shouting that kids do in play.
Odin is house trained and crate trained. He is crated whenever we are away from the home, and at night, as he is only 8mths old and shouldn’t be trusted alone in the house right yet. He does well in his crate and rests quietly, but gets very excited and happy when you come home! Regardless of how long you have been away you will be greeted enthusiastically upon your return. Odin is starting in obedience training and has basic knowledge to get him started. He walks well on leash. He cannot be trusted off leash yet but that will come with time and training. Odin is good in the car and enjoys car rides. Odin is good with people being around his food bowl but he is a vigorous eater so food doesn’t last very long in there anyway.
Odin is an affectionate dog who loves any attention you give him but is not demanding of constant attention. He wants to be a part of your life and to be your companion on adventures. Odin needs an active family that enjoys the outdoors and will commit to keeping him well exercised and stimulated. If you aren’t already an active person please don’t consider Odin, he will complement the life of an already active person but won’t be suitable for someone who is not already participating in long walks/runs/hikes. He would do especially well as a dog sports dog or obedience dog or for someone who wants the challenge of training a dog to an advanced level. He is playful and fun and good natured. Odin wants to be a partner in his family’s adventures. He is up for anything. Are you up for a new best friend?
