My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

OSCAR is an 18 month old black neutered male who weighs 53 pounds (should be 60-65 lbs). He is good with other dogs, played with several at shelter. He knows sit, come and down. Pulls some on lead but is better with an Easy Walk harness. Keeping his run clean at the kennel and vet. Oscar is a great dog who has been through a lot since he came into lab rescue but always is wagging his tail when he sees anyone close. He who likes to be with you and get attention and is loves to play with other dogs. He would like to retrieve all day but can't play as much as he would like as we want him to take it easy because of his torn ACL. He has large areas of Alopecia (hair loss) most likely from a severe case of flea infestation which was treated when he went to the vet. They took several skin scrapping and no mites were found. When he was neutered a more thorough exam was done while he was under anesthesia and they found that his right CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) may need surgery to be evaluated by our surgeon. Lab Rescue will pay for the surgery if done at one of our vets. He is approved for kids 10 and up.

Oscar's story - A good Samaritan saw him get hit at a busy intersection, she stopped and went over to help him and to see if she could find his owners. He wasn't wearing a collier so she could identify his owners, she brought him to the vet to be looked at and treated. Initial exam found his right rear leg stifle was sore and tender to the touch, x-rays showed #3 & 4 metatarsals (bones in the foot) were fractured. Additionally he had abrasions, and soft tissue swelling over his body. He was infested with fleas and has and large areas of Alopecia (hair loss). Through all of this he was calm and would wag his tail whenever he met someone, everyone said what a nice dog he was. His rescuer sent a message to one of our volunteers asking if we could help.

Update from foster home (11/12): Oscar had surgery this afternoon. It was actually the posterior cruciate ligament that was damaged and not the anterior one, which is the more common one. The recovery will be easier, but he'll still need to be on a leash for the next couple of weeks and will need some flexing and stretching exercises. He's a good boy!

Update from foster home (11/6): Oscar has developed a maneuver that his foster calls the sneaky snuggle. He starts at the opposite end of the couch and looks to be snoozing peacefully. Then he starts to wiggle and wave his front feet. Next thing you know he's wiggled down the couch on his back and his head is in your lap. If you let him, he'll be completely in your lap. Once he gives you the big "I'm so cute" eyes it's impossible to not give in to the snuggles. Oscar is very happy around people, and he's learning not to jump up for attention. He's not bothered by cars, large trucks, bicycles, kids on scooters, runners, or anything else. Mostly Oscar just wants to check out the world, play with all the chew toys, and be as close to his people as possible. He crates easily but prefers to lay on the couch. Oscar is housebroken and quick about going first thing in the morning. He is going to be a wonderful, gorgeous dog for the family that is willing to give him the training, love, and attention he deserves.

Update from foster home (11/4): Oscar has landed! We took a short walk and he does okay on an Easy Walk harness. Loves to sniff everything, loves chew toys, and loves treats. With some encouragement Oscar will sit for treats and takes them well. He goes in the crate easily, objects to being in it initially, but quiets down eventually. He is going to be gorgeous when his coat fills in. In true Lab fashion, his tail never stops wagging. Oscar has the sweetest face and despite being underweight, Oscar has a spectacular Lablean. He will go with a training addendum and is probably not the best choice for a first-time adopter. He'd love an active family and lots of places to sniff and play.
