Cause of eye issues: Mature cataract in left eye. Right eye has possible lens luxation with little sight.
Health issues: Newton is doing well! However, like most seniors, he does have a few issues. Newton has hypothyroidism and takes a pill twice a day. He is also on Lasix daily due to a cough . The cause of his hair loss is likely a combination of neglect, hypothyroidism and possible hormonal imbalance, but his skin is in good condition and requires no special care at this time. Please read below for more details.

Information:
October 24, 2013: Newton is a happy and delightful fellow! He is such an adorable little boy that you just can't help but smile when you look at him.
It is obvious when you see Newton that he has very little hair on his body, although he has a normal coat on his front legs and head. His skin, while a bit dry, is in good condition. He requires no special care or bathing at this time; however, he gets cold easily and needs to wear a shirt or jacket whenever he is cold, either inside or outside. The reason for his hair loss is not known, although it could be related to his hypothyroidism, his previous neglect, a hormonal imbalance, or a combination. Newton does not wear a collar or harness, except when he has to travel. When he does, he wears his harness over a shirt so it does not irritate his skin.
Newton loves to be around people and will go up on his hind legs to be picked up. He's a real cuddle bug and will spend all day happily in a lap wrapped in a blanket, if he could!
He is not much of a walker, but will explore my small fenced yard on his own. He has some knee issues and does walk with a slight bowing of his legs, but gets around perfectly fine

Newton is completely blind in his left eye from a mature cataract, but has a bit of sight in his right eye. He also has little hearing due to chronic ear infections, but he can hear louder noises, and he does know his name. He is not a big fan of having his ears touched, most likely because they were sore for so long, and so we work slowly around his ears. Other than that, he is a very gentle little boy!
Newton does have a few health issues, as do most seniors. A cancerous mass was found in his testicle during his neuter, but it is almost always the type that doesn't spread. It has now been removed and so his prognosis is very good! He does have a cough that can keep him up at night. It was better while at his temporary foster home in VA, but here in NY, the coughing has started again. He is currently on Lasix (a diuretic -water pill- used to treat fluid retention) and this works very well. Xrays showed his heart to be a completely normal size and he only has a grade 1 murmur, but this is something that should be monitored. He'll also need regular blood work to monitor his thyroid level.
Newton is completely housebroken. He sleeps through the night in my bed which he also shares with another dog, and he gets along very well with the other dogs and cats here. He does well with both men and women, but a home without small children is recommended as he is small and fragile and could be easily injured. Newton is looking for a very special family who can look past his hair loss to see the gentle and loving boy underneath.
