My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UNIX is a 5 year old yellow neutered male Lab who weighs 53 pounds (should be 60 lbs). Unix loves people and to play, he has two things that he thinks are important: one, be with people and two, to play if you will play with him. If he can't play he is happy to hang with you. I think Unix was someone's inside dog as he came in at a good weight and shape. He is good with other dogs, was in a yard with two others. Knows some commands sit, down, come. He is easy on a leash after a few minutes. He is approved for kids 10 and up.

Update from foster home (11/13): Unix is gaining confidence in his foster home! He is starting to go down a flight of stairs with the encouragement of treats on every other stair. He will countersurf if given the opportunity, so the best solution for that is not leaving anything tempting on the counters. It is easy to redirect him when he becomes mouthy by putting one of his toys in his mouth. We do not leave him alone (even with his fur brother and sisters) frequently, but he does well in the crate and often falls sound asleep. He continues to win over hearts and minds with his kisses and love.

Update (11/4): Unix loves to follow his humans around. He would do well with a family that is frequently home and who does not have to leave him in a crate for long periods of time, though he does fine crated for short periods. He's gained much confidence since coming into his foster home and does stairs well. He loves his food, so it's best to not leave food out on the counters or to feed him close to other dogs. He is very attentive and listens and learns well. He continues to win over hearts and minds with his kisses and love.

Update (11/2): Unix enjoys going for long walks with his foster family. He is a true sweetheart and loves other dogs and LOVES people. He is very playful. He knows sit and shake and seems extremely happy to be here. He would do well in a home with a well balanced and playful dog, but he would also do well in a home with no dogs. He plays so well with other dogs and enjoys kissing them all over. He loves to play hard and is happy to be out of the kennel.

****
Unix has a heart condition. After he was neutered they noticed a large amount of mucus when they removed his air tube. He developed a significant fever, and vet started treating him for pneumonia with antibiotics, fever came down to normal in a couple of days. Took x-rays of his chest to see if he had fluid buildup upon review vet noticed heart was enlarged and lungs showed some unusual condition sent them to cardiologist for her opinion. Cardiologist was concerned and recommended she see him and perform an Echocardiogram.

He had an appointment with Cardiologist results showed:
He may have had and was treated for heartworms as his heart showed changes consistent with a dog that has had heartworms There is a large mass in Unix pulmonary artery, it is causing stress to his pulmonary arteries and the right side of his heart.
Recommendations:
1. Heartworm retest -Retest was negative, urinalysis showed some protein and a few crystals.
2. Started on 1/4 tablet low dose aspirin once a day which will act as blood thinner.
3. Continue Clavamox for a minimum of 6 weeks.
4. Diet: Normal -Avoid salty snacks (deli meats, cheese, Pepperoni or Snausages).
5. Exercise: Quiet - leash walks only.
6. Recheck echocardiogram (pulmonary arteries) in 6-8 weeks.
