My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

“TEQUILA”
Blue & Gold Macaw

Tequila is a Blue and Gold Macaw and is about the most calm and accepting macaw I have ever seen or handled as a foster mom. He came from a home where he was loved. He has had good nutrition and his vet check was wonderful. Tequila’s gender is unknown.
Even though Tequila has a very pleasant disposition for a macaw, he is still a macaw. Macaws typically bluff lunge, but that’s not to say it will always be a bluff. When arriving into rescue Tequila often refused to get off his play stand or come out of his cage. He would not step up from the front under any circumstances. However, after finally vacating the cage, he is just so sweet anyone could handle him.
Now that Tequila has been in rescue for some time, he will step up from the front and very willingly comes out of his cage and off his play stand. He’s a little piglet with his food…meaning he LOVES food. He would prefer people food but is not allowed to have any until he eats his pellets first. Tequila loves scrambled eggs, pasta, fruit and nuts. I can’t state emphatically enough how critical it is to understand macaw nutrition – although he can have all these food items, they must be restricted. Too many parrots have come into rescue having been on the wrong diet. Many sustained organ damage and some have died much too young. Since Tequila is a young macaw, approximately six years old, nutrition is also critical to his maturation as well.
This boy is very playful. If you dance and sing around him, he loves it and will bob his head up and down. It you say “Big Pretty” and throw your arms up in the air he reacts by spreading his wings as high as he can. In addition, if you keep him up too late (past 7 pm) he will let you know by doing extremely loud parrot calls. Otherwise, he is a quiet little boy so far. He will make a great companion for the right family who understands macaw behavior, nutrition, and needs!
Tequila recently went on a TV interview to help promote the rescue; you can see that video here: http://www.floridatoday.com/videonetwork/2769519297001/Parrot-named-Tequila-ready-for-adoption
