Marlboro is a special guy that needs a special home. He has the markings of a cattle dog but there is certainly something else mixed in. Marlboro came into a shelter in southern Virginia with his companion when his owner died. For a dog that had lived its life with one owner, this was an extremely upsetting event. Marlboro's companion died shortly after being brought to the shelter - he just didn't have the will to live. This poor guy was at the end of his time when a great person stepped in to save him. I guess everyone at the shelter wanted a puppy. Marlboro may not be a spring chicken at roughly 14 years (that is what the shelter said, but his foster mom thinks he is 12 at the oldest), but with the right family, he has a lot of time left.
This guy is going to need a special home for several reasons. We believe him to be almost completely deaf, although he has outstanding vision. Marlboro would not do well in a home with kids because he has an extreme cattle dog type temperament. He is determined and can be willful at times. This guy clearly wasnt crate trained while he was with his owner. He doesnt like his crate and if you take away his ability to flee, he will snap. Like any dog, Marlboro does not do things without a reason. He isnt mean, but he has a lot going on right now.
Two of the people that mattered most to him are now gone and he has been thrust into a new situation and cant hear a thing that is going on. He just needs the right home and some time to adjust. Marlboro probably wouldnt do too well with other dogs. He came in with his dog friend, but he has not been able to adjust to the ones at his foster home. The type of home Marlboro is looking for is a home with a dog savvy owner that will give Marlboros story a happy ending. Marlboro is a very sweet dog in the right situation. He will lie by your feet and be the best companion. He walks well on a leash with no pulling (he loves to be outside), is fine with cats, and won't even try to jump up on your furniture. He just needs a home that will understand his special personality and be able to work with him to bring out the best in him. If you would be willing to do that for this guy, he will repay you with a lot of love.
