Saving Mabel
Together We Can Make A Difference
Saving the abused, discarded or neglected is not always easy, but hounds like Mabel depend on each and everyone one of us to step forward and show that we care enough to help those that cannot help themselves.
Mabel (formerly Cleo) entered rescue one year ago, seized by animal control in a case of severe neglect with two other hounds. These poor souls had endured years of unspeakable neglect, living outdoors in inadequate conditions with no medical care, being bred countless times. All were in deplorable condition, in their senior years and sadly Mabel was the only one to make it out alive.
Mabel’s condition was bleak, but Canadian Hound Rescue (CHR) saw hope for Mabel. Mabel was heartworm positive, eight years old, had numerous mammary tumors and was infested with parasites. At the time of seizure the abusers were still attempting to breed her.
Desperately wanting to see this girl have the chance to live her golden years being loved and cared for like she so deserved, CHR opened their doors one year ago and offered Mabel the safe haven that she needed to survive.
Mabel completed heartworm treatment with flying colours. Chest and heart X-rays confirmed no permanent damage. Next she underwent surgery to be spayed and to address the mammary tumors. Mabel did not fair so well and nearly lost her fight for life during surgery. But Mabel has an incredible will to live and carry on with her newfound life. Another surgery was needed to complete the spaying and remove the remaining tumors. Mabel then developed a mass cell tumor on her shoulder. Luck was once again shining down on Mabel and the tumor was removed and the histology report indicated it was a low grade, offering Mabel a good prognosis.
A few months ago Mabel began losing weight, going from 94 pounds to 71 pounds, despite a great appetite and a continued zest for life. She has undergone numerous diagnostic testing and has made some improvements, but we are not out of the woods yet. Most recently Mabel has been taking costly digestive enzymes and B12 injections to aid her body’s ability to absorb the nutrients from her food. CHR continues to work with the vet to achieve a confirmed diagnosis for the cause of Mabel’s condition.
Mabel turned nine years old while in CHR’s care recovering from years of neglect. It is our hope that Mabel is given the chance for many more birthdays to enjoy her new life that she is so much enjoying despite her medical challenges. This girl has the most positive outlook on life, is so very loving and such a comical clown, with a fog horn howl when excited like no other!! Please, considering joining our fight to help Mabel.
In these hard economical times it’s hard to ask our CHR friends and supporters for funds. Mabel’s expenses for the past year are in the thousands and have taken a toll on the funds for the rescue organization, but one look into Mabel’s eyes and we know every cent has been worth it.
If you are able to donate to Mabel’s continued medical care, CHR and Mabel would be forever grateful. No donation is too small…in numbers we can all make a difference!
