Tyler was rescued from a shelter in OH. He was transported to PA where it was learned that he was shocking afraid of men. He was taken to a kennel and while there an A&B volunteer went to visit him and work with him every day. He went through basic obedience and graduated. After four months in the kennel, Tyler's foster mom happened across his information on the A&B website and offered to foster him. He has been in his foster home since early February and is doing excellently! When he first met his foster mom, he showed the same concern he does with meeting all new people, but with structure and patience, within a week, she quickly won him over and he comes to her for petting, snuggling, cuddling, and play time all the time now.
Tyler's foster mom thinks Tyler is an absolute gem! He is a funny, entertaining boy. He LOVES toys and will dig through the toy basket nightly pulling out all the toys and surrounding himself with them. He used to take his toys to the other side of the room to play with them, but now he stays front and center in the middle of the pack directly in front of his foster mom during his nightly play sessions. He occasionally will get stressed when the other dogs come near his toys, but a quick verbal correction from his foster mom stops him and he usually bows down to play with the other dogs. If only they would all play with him! His foster mom also loves when he does his wiggle waggle dance, standing on his back legs swaying all over and up and down when he get's really excited especially when it's time to go outside and PLAY. Did we mention Tyler LOVES to play? He fetches and returns toys to his foster mom and sits (well, bouncing sits) waiting for the next toss.
Tyler is a gem in the house and loves to be outdoors too. Tyler greets visitors with concern and hesitation, however this has improved the longer he is in his foster home and builds confidence in his foster mom. He follows her lead and if she says it's OK, he is able to control his fear much better and greet new people and accept treats from them. He is generally immediately accepting of women once he gives them a sniff and is learning to accept men more readily as well.
It was originally thought that Tyler need a female only home. That is not the case. Tyler needs a home with patient people, no matter who or what they are! They need to understand that Tyler has deep-routed fears, but so wants to overcome them! His first thought is always "flight" when frightened and so recognizing his very easily read signs is simple and just requires that you pay attention to his needs and know when something is just too much for him. He also needs people who will help him live a calm and happy life by doing simple techniques such as crating him to sleep at night and leashing him and asking new people to greet him slowly and let him meet them. While it might be nice for the people to have Tyler to sleep on their bed, this is actually cause for concern for Tyler. He wants to protect the family and every change, noise, inside or out causes him to alert. However, he sleeps a full 8 hour night without a peep in his crate. Tyler has stayed with husband and wife couple when his foster mom traveled and they had no problem with him because they stuck to the routine in the house. They had a lot of fun playing out in the yard too! This is all working very well in his foster home as he is not stressed and has put on some much-needed weight and is filling out to be a beautiful boy. His vet check proved he was very healthy physically and he did well with the vet probing and touching him. This was because he was with his foster mom and he felt safe and secure. The most successful dogs in any foster dog program are those that can bond quickly and Tyler's ability to bond quickly with his foster mom proves he can bond with anyone! He just needs a patient, loving and structured person who is willing!
Tyler is currently living in a suburban setting and is doing very well. He does not attempt to jump a four foot chain link fence. In fact, his foster mom has some three foot temporary fencing in the yard to protect some new grass seed and he doesn't jump that either. He is content to lie in the yard sunning himself or play with his toys.
Tyler would not do well in an urban environment. He has recently found he can see reflections in the windows in the evening and barks at them until his foster mom says, 'enough, you're OK'. Tyler also barks at passers by on the street out front. He does stop when asked and comes when called when he's outside so he is not a bother to the neighbors.
Tyler knows lots of commands and when his excitement doesn't get the better of him, he sits at the door to go out and always sits to be brushed or get his leash on. He walks very nicely on a gentle leader (which is a head halter). It has a calming affect on him.
Tyler is living in a home with 5 other dogs and has no issues with any of them. In fact, Tyler MUST have another dog in his adoptive home. He LOVES doggie companions. When he meets people at his foster home when he is the only one present outside, he shows concern and fear, but when he has a doggie companion with him he is fun loving and care free. He would do best with a doggie companion who is also fun-loving and care free as he takes his cues from other dogs.
Tyler had a few accidents when first coming to his foster home, but is now housetrained and goes to the door when he has to go out.
Tyler's foster mom is available throughout Tyler's life for follow-up training advice. You can read some detailed updates about his progress in foster care and see additional pictures of him at: http://www.aandbtyler.blogspot.com/

Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue's goal is rescuing English Setters in need of new homes. While in our care the dogs will be vetted, spayed or neutered, and evaluated in foster homes, where they can learn love and stability and we can determine which type of home would work best for each dog. Once adopted Above and Beyond volunteers will be available for the dogs and adopters for each dogs life, with advice and support. Our mission is to put English Setters welfare first and foremost. We are a non-profit, charitable 501(c)(3) organization. 100% of your donation goes to help English Setters in need and is tax deductible.
Each home will be carefully screened to determine whether an English Setter is the correct choice. Home visits will be done as well as reference checks, no dog will be placed before it's time. Every dog rescued by Above and Beyond English Setter rescue will remain in our care until the correct match is found for that dog. English Setters in Above and Beyond's care will never be warehoused. Each dog will live in a home situation (no kennels or living outdoors) as either the ONLY foster dog or one of 2 foster dogs, so a true evaluation of each dog can occur before adoption.
We also will assist shelters housing English Setters by courtesy posting the dogs they have available and if the shelter agrees we will speak to potential adopters about the breed and help with screening.
For more information on our mission, or for assistance, please contact Michael Myers or anyone listed on our Contacts page.
When an application is submitted, you will receive a phone call and an initial review. The next step is to check your references and then a home visit will be scheduled, if you are approved through each of the prior steps. Every dog in A and B's program is available until an approved adopter speaks for that dog. No one can speak for any dog until they are approved and we do NOT hold dogs for anyone. We have had people who were disappointed that they did not get the dog they initially applied for, but the ones who hung in there with us would not change a thing now that they have their A & B Dog.
Please Note: You must be at least 21 years old to apply to adopt an A&B Setter. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Signature is implied and assumed on e-mail & online Adoption Applications.
Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue will be raising its adoption fee to $245.00 on all applications received as of April 1st, 2007. We have made every attempt at keeping our adoption fee the lowest we could despite the rising costs associated with spaying and neutering, immunizations and other related routine care. In some instances our adoption fee’s never comes close to the care associated before an adoption of one of our dogs takes place. We do feel however that our adoption fee is still less then if the adopter had to pay these expenses out of their pocket. Also remember we include the first year of complete pet recovery protection for your dog with your adoption fee through Pet Shepherd.
