Peter Pan's story...
01-16-09 PeterPan is a 13 lb blonde, DOB 09-07-96.
He arrived with his littermate, Wendy as their human went into an assisted living facility. He arrived with his traveling bag, blanket, pillow, complete vet records, a 3 page owner surrender of his likes, dislikes, habits to help him settle in. Peter has had ongoing eye issues since a pup so needs eye ointment on a daily basis. He has trouble with his vision yet once he learns where his surroundings are those won't be an issue. He is faithful in his use of piddle pads, also does well when taken out on a schedule or has the use of a doggy door.

PeterPan has been placed in foster care with Marti.
Her updates on Peter's likes & dislikes will let you know if this fur-fella is suitable for your home.

First update from Marti-
"All went very well last night, Jackie knocked on door about 8 and Wendy jumped off loveseat and greeted her, I then sat Pete on floor and he greeted her, she liked both of them. At bedtime I put Pete on his blankie and pillow and Wendy on bed with me. Both went to sleep immediately and then about 3 Wendy stood up and looked down so I sat her next to Pete and we all slept well until morning. Wendy has nailed peddle pad and hope Pete will too. Both are much more calm and Wendy is asleep on loveseat and Pete is on his bed. They both like to be petted and have not eaten much, but I know they will later today. They are very quiet and very good. Will let you know when they pick up on eating, I have a feeling they were both used to people food as treats and filled in with their food. Both very nice dogs."

Late PM update:
"Well both are now eating their dog food. Pete held out until around noon and then he came in and began to eat. Still Wendy held out and stared at me all the way thru lunch and dinner. She then jumped off loveseat and came to my feet, so I bent down to pet her and she turned over and let me give her belly rubs. I then took her out and she now likes the tie out just fine, upon coming back into the house she headed straight to bowl and ate not alot but she ate and they are both now asleep on their blankie and pillow in bedroom. I will take her out at ten or before. I think we have made major steps today.... Great dogs!"

01-20 Pete & Wendy are doing just fine and Wendy is getting friendlier each day.

01-22 Marti & Carol took Pete & Wendy to Linda's Grooming for some touch up work under the nose, tail, paws.
"Pete and Wendy went to Linda's at 8:30 this morning and both were done by 9. Both rode nicely and quietly on my lap and Linda did a really nice job. That mess on Wendy under her eye was a little tender and it was shaved off so Linda said to put alittle salve on it. We brought them straight back here and they were both glad to be home......All is well here and Wendy loves to go out on tie out in this kind of weather."

01-25 Pete is quiet and sweet and sleeps most of time,.......He is just having a hard time with this.....Neither one overeat and seem to dislike their food, and beg for people food. I am treating Petes eyes everyday and it is alot easier now that his hair has been cut.

01-26 An early morning phone chat with Marti.
PeterPan is having a bit of a challenge. His little blanket gives him security, spends most of his day sleeping on it. He seems rather confused so Marti is keeping his routine as close to the same as possible every day.

01-30 PeterPan has come on-site leaving Wendy with Marti.
PeterPan will benefit from a bit of stimulation rather than spend his entire day dozing. BabyCakes is blind, does very well with the pack & we hope in a few days PeterPan will join BabyCakes in exploring the small dog play yard on nice days.
PeterPan was given some brief time on the porch, seemed to quickly learn where porch furniture was, also found his blanket. The sunshine has returned so the rays MAY help him chase away his winter blues.

Blind dogs DO adapt to their surroundings. We believe PeterPan would be PAWfect for a home with someone that has vision problems, doesn't move furniture about, may even have a bit of cabin fever, appreciates sunshine on warm days during winter months.
Peter will be gradually introduced to the rescue pack. BabyCakes may appoint herself as his "Mascot" helping him adjust as she has done so well, gets around beautifully.

01-31 PeterPan has now joined the pack, total freedom of the kitchen/dining area. He spent time on the porch in the sunbeams then came inside, cautiously walking, learning his way about.
He has a soft snore so if you miss your snoring mate, he will be PAWfect for you!

02-01 PeterPan will be visiting Doc the first of the week. We want our vet's opinion on the eye meds, see if something else may work better. We also need his teeth checked, possibly have a dental done. Dental hygiene helps the kidneys, thus lungs & heart. Yet, with Peter's age it's always a risk with anesthesia. Doc will make the final decision on how much can be done to keep him happy, healthy.

About Our Rescue Group...
We are a small, foster home based rescue, licensed by the Mo. Dept of Agriculture in June 2004. We specialize in senior dogs.

We also offer Hospice care for dying dogs as space permits.

This site is dedicated to Max, rescued by Carolyn, and Lady, rescued by Connie. Both were senior dogs that were in kill shelters and were "Naturals" when visiting the care center. Because of them, this rescue was born.

We handle no more than two large senior dogs at a time. All of the dogs are completely vetted including but not limited to altered, vaccinated, dental & microchipped before being placed for adoption.

Most, yet not all, visit care centers to become familiar with medical equipment. The goal is to get the senior pets into senior homes or non-senior homes with a low energy lifestyle.

Our goal for 2007 is to have a few small dogs, under 25 lbs., 1 to 6 years of age, in our foster homes. These small dogs will be closely observed for 2 weeks before being adopted out. This will allow us, hopefully, to notice and care for any medical problems or behavior problems that may arise. Their adoptions will help provide funds for the special needs of the large senior dogs that wait longer to find that special fur-ever home.

We are working on the Mighty Mutt Youth Program. This program will focus on small, young mixed breed dogs that are good with children. After all, how will children get experience with dogs unless they have a first pet? We need to educate the young people of today to make the future better for the dogs of tomorrow.

Mixed-breed dogs make excellent pets and lifelong friends. As a general rule, they enjoy better health and temperament than purebred animals. Unfortunately, a great number of these wonderful pets await their KILL DATE in shelters around the country. They are often not adopted because they are not a purebred dog. Thus, many are DESTROYED! The goal of the Mighty Mutt Youth Program is to change that by:

1. Locating kill shelter dogs that interact well with other animals and children

2. Rescuing these young dogs before they are killed and get them to the veterinarian

3. Uniting the right family with the right Mighty Mutt

4. Educating the young person and his/her family with guidelines for responsible pet ownership and proper preventative care for pets

We operate solely on donations. We can always use towels, sheets, baby blankets, shampoo and grooming supplies. For those of you that love to garage sale and shop in thrift stores, we could use gently used collars, leashes, bowls, any pet supplies. You may mail them to the address shown below. Your donations will be used to save the lives of pets and provide veterinary care.

In 2009 we became a 501 (c) 3. Your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We send a monthly newsletter and will be glad to add you to our list. We will also send a year end financial statement upon request. We do not pay for advertising or salaries. We have wonderful volunteers providing foster care, assisting with care center visits with the pets, computer work and fund raisers. The young children who volunteer today to help with the pets will grow up to be animal lovers and advocates. We have an obedience instructor willing to work with you so that you may keep your dog. Word of mouth in a small town spreads like wildfire. Folks love old dogs. We truly adore ALL the volunteers!

Come Meet Our Pets...
We are in a rural area five miles from historic downtown Cole Camp. Some of the pets may be in foster homes. We do not have a kennel as all of these pets live in a home environment. We are open 7 days a week by appointment.

Cole Camp is located in Benton County. Cole Camp is southeast of Kansas City about 2 hours, northeast of Springfield about 2 hours and southwest of Columbia about 2 hours. Cole Camp is located on 52 Highway, a short drive from Truman Lake and the Truman Dam. Please check out Cole Camp at www.colecampmo.com There are many places to visit while in the area looking for a pet, and some of the businesses are downright pet friendly. The Harris Guest House is a B&B which encourages well behaved pets to spend the night.
Our Adoption Process...
Our goal is to find the right placement for each pet. We never want them to be hungry or unwanted again. We will answer every question to the very best of our knowledge and always be honest when it comes to the animal's suitability for a home. We want to make sure that you get the pet that will suit your special needs and that you will be able to meet the special needs of your pet.

Senior citizens and disabled receive a discount.
We also offer a discount to those in uniform keeping us safe.

The adoption fee ranges from $150 to $300.

The fee is based upon veterinary care, age & size of dog.
