Daisy Mae Gautreaux (pronounced go-tro) (or La Daisy)
Daisy is approximately 5-6 years young and is a tri color setter. She is white, black and touches of tan on her legs. We began fostering Daisy in October 2008. It was very apparent she was starving and had been over bred. Her back hip bones protruded, you could count every rib from afar, her vertebrae and shoulder blades were also protruding. She weighed 35 pounds which is very low for Daisy's frame. Her top and bottom front teeth were worn down to the gum. The hair on her tail and back legs were cut short by someone so not to show the urine stain from staying in a kennel. Daisy drops weight easily. I am happy to say that today, Daisy weighs 47 pounds, her bones are no longer protruding, and her feathering is beginning to actually feather. She has been spayed, is current on her vaccinations, has no heart worms, had her teeth cleaned and is not taking medication. She no longer devours her food quickly. She knows she will be fed 2 x a day and is not food aggressive. We have her on Hill's Science Diet Adult. This diet seems to do well for Daisy's needs. The white on Daisy actually sparkles like little diamonds in the sun. She loves attention and prefers to stay inside but enjoys outside with someone. She sleeps in her designated chair (the first of my dogs to ever be allowed to do that) and is rather possessive of it. She gets along well with my dogs, Indi and Clyde, our two cats, and my daughter's golden Emma. But I have to say that it took a while for her to adjust being around other dogs. To this day she may still growl at them but is doing so much better. It is of my opinion Daisy would do better if she were the only dog in the family. It is wise to take her walking so she can become more socialized without her thinking she has to protect her self. Daisy needs a home that can put her first and give her lots of attention and love. She has a great personality and a little separation anxiety. She stays in a large crate when we go out for a lengthy period. She no longer pants with anxiety when in the crate. After she is sure she has not been abandoned again, she will show you great appreciation and the anxiety will lessen. Although I do not recommend this, Daisy goes out in the yard with us without a leash and listens to us. She knows the come and sit command. Should you ever raise your voice or hand in any motion, she will cower which lets us know she has been abused physically too. Daisy loves to hunt and point. She also loves to go riding. If I could I would adopt her my self but I have too many now. Daisy deserves a forever home who can give her the love and patience and understanding she so deserves.

Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue's goal is rescuing English Setters in need of new homes. While in our care the dogs will be vetted, spayed or neutered, and evaluated in foster homes, where they can learn love and stability and we can determine which type of home would work best for each dog. Once adopted Above and Beyond volunteers will be available for the dogs and adopters for each dogs life, with advice and support. Our mission is to put English Setters welfare first and foremost. We are a non-profit, charitable 501(c)(3) organization. 100% of your donation goes to help English Setters in need and is tax deductible.
Each home will be carefully screened to determine whether an English Setter is the correct choice. Home visits will be done as well as reference checks, no dog will be placed before it's time. Every dog rescued by Above and Beyond English Setter rescue will remain in our care until the correct match is found for that dog. English Setters in Above and Beyond's care will never be warehoused. Each dog will live in a home situation (no kennels or living outdoors) as either the ONLY foster dog or one of 2 foster dogs, so a true evaluation of each dog can occur before adoption.
We also will assist shelters housing English Setters by courtesy posting the dogs they have available and if the shelter agrees we will speak to potential adopters about the breed and help with screening.
For more information on our mission, or for assistance, please contact Michael Myers or anyone listed on our Contacts page.
When an application is submitted, you will receive a phone call and an initial review. The next step is to check your references and then a home visit will be scheduled, if you are approved through each of the prior steps. Every dog in A and B's program is available until an approved adopter speaks for that dog. No one can speak for any dog until they are approved and we do NOT hold dogs for anyone. We have had people who were disappointed that they did not get the dog they initially applied for, but the ones who hung in there with us would not change a thing now that they have their A & B Dog.
Please Note: You must be at least 21 years old to apply to adopt an A&B Setter. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Signature is implied and assumed on e-mail & online Adoption Applications.
Above & Beyond English Setter Rescue will be raising its adoption fee to $245.00 on all applications received as of April 1st, 2007. We have made every attempt at keeping our adoption fee the lowest we could despite the rising costs associated with spaying and neutering, immunizations and other related routine care. In some instances our adoption fee’s never comes close to the care associated before an adoption of one of our dogs takes place. We do feel however that our adoption fee is still less then if the adopter had to pay these expenses out of their pocket. Also remember we include the first year of complete pet recovery protection for your dog with your adoption fee through Pet Shepherd.
