Sanno means, ‘Mountain King’ and this guy will certainly be a mountain King when he fills out! His nickname, however, is ‘Snowman’. He was found a stray and quite filthy. He was a gentleman at the shelter and continues to be a gentleman. He was a little too interested in other male dogs, but since being neutered, this should tone down. He is housebroken and walks well on lead. Knows what a bedroom is, but hasn’t helped himself to the bed yet. He would probably do best as an only pet. He talks to you when you put his lead on for a walk. He was temporarily placed in a foster home, but their situation changed and he had to leave. Here is what the foster home said about him in the time that they had him. 'he had the house to roam. When we got home he had done nothing :-) He did not mess with any of Jasmine's toys - no chewing - he was a good boy. When we go to bed he comes upstairs and sleeps in the room with us. When the door opens he barks to let us know he is there. He is a very good boy, and Jasmine and him are doing well...he gets all kind of rubs :-) He is an absolute angel!!! He talks a lot…..especially when its time to go outside. He is housebroken in every sense of the way…no accidents – no chewing - nothing! He did get busted sleeping on the couch J I got home all the pillows were on the ground …..the next morning..I guess I did not make enough noise…I got down stairs to make our coffee and he was stretched out all over the couch – he was comfortable J He just raised his head and looked as if to say “ oh its just you” and laid back down and snoozed a bit longer….I whispered for Kevin to come downstairs and we were cracking up J Sanno & Jasmine are buds J but he did not like it when Jasmine stood next to him when he was eating (even thought she gave him the food) so I explained to Jasmine that he is afraid she may take his food away and to not go near him when he is drinking/eating….I told her that when he was on the streets all alone he may not have had anything to eat so now he protects his food and she is OK J Even the neighbors love him! He is getting groomed tomorrow so I hope he will feel like a new pup J One thing that surprised me: Sanno saw a schoolbus and went “nuts” in an excited way. He wanted to get to the bus? I wondered if maybe he remembered picking up the kids from his previous home? He is now enjoying butt rubs and belly rubs! He is absolutely a special pup! Jasmine is their 4 yr old daughter. He also does well with the 5 yr old girl at the kennel. Bear in mind, these are children who have been around big dogs most of their lives.Let us know if you have room in your home and heart for this gentle giant.
Akita Rescue Mid-Atlantic Coast, Inc. (ARMAC), founded in 1984, is one of the oldest Akita rescues in the United States. ARMAC is run solely by volunteers and all funding comes from private donations for the general public. ARMAC fulfills a wide variety of Akita needs in the greater Washington DC area. It educates and offers support to Akita owners, not only those who adopt from ARMAC, but all Akita owners regardless of where they got their Akita. But most importantly, ARMAC saves the lives of Akitas that would otherwise be euthanized in area shelters. All of ARMAC's fostered Akitas are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped, tattooed and temperament evaluated prior to adoption. Potential adopters are screened carefully and thoroughly to ensure there is a perfect match between family and Akita. ARMAC's assistance doesn't stop at adoption. ARMAC offers support to its adoptive families throughout the lifetime of their Akita. ARMAC's goal is to avoid Akitas ever being given-up in the first place by educating the public about the breed, its history, and the many challenges that Akita ownership brings with it.
* ARMAC normally will not place an Akita into a home that is more than 5 hours driving distance from the DC metro area. * Prior experience with a large dominant breed is preferred, but not required. * ARMAC normally will not place an Akita into a home with children under the age of 12 unless we are positive that the Akita adores children. * A securely fenced yard or kennel run is preferred, but many adopted orphans have been excellent apartment dwellers. * If you rent your home, ARMAC will require a copy of your lease to ensure that it allows for large dogs. * Personal references are required and will be contacted. * A vet reference is required if currently own pets or have owned pets in the past, please contact your vet and give them permission to speak with one of the ARMAC representatives. * Please make sure you answer all questions on the adoption application, incomplete applications will not be processed. * A home visit is required, all family members must be present. * It is mandatory that all prospective adopters read our Information Package prior to adoption. * The application process can take anywhere from one week to six weeks depending upon reference checks, etc. * Adoption fee is required.
