Bloodhounds require A SECURELY FENCED YARD. Invisible/underground electric fences don't work on these dogs. They get a scent and are totally oblivious to anything else around them.....including traffic. Bloodhounds don't tie or chain well either. They are fine for apartment living as long as they get enough exercise. All of our dogs are adopted to be 'in-the-house' family members. Bloodhounds are not for everyone, they can't roam free and can't be walked off leash.
Canadian Hound Rescue is dedicated to promoting responsible hound ownership. Many of the hounds that end up in shelters or rescue are abandoned hunting dogs that were previously tied to a doghouse outside for most of the year, only to be let loose during hunting season. We believe that no hound should have to suffer such a fate, and will place hounds as indoor pets only. Since many of our hounds have never lived in a house before, all dogs are initially placed in foster homes where they are housetrained and learn basic house manners. While in foster care our hounds are also spayed or neutered, brought up to date on vaccinations, and provided with any necessary medical care. Finally, their temperament and personality are evaluated so that we can find the best possible match between each individual hound and its adoptive home.
If you would like to meet one of our hounds please contact us as they are located in foster homes throughout Ontario. We always need more foster homes. Fostering is essential to Canadian Hound Rescue in saving hounds and keeping our rescue going. The more homes we have, the more dogs we can save.
Our Adoption Process...
All adoptive homes are required to go through a screening process that includes a telephone interview, filling out an application, reference checks and a home visit. An adoption fee is required to offset some of the costs incurred in caring for and re-homing each hound. Canadian Hound Rescue remains committed to each animal for the rest of its life and if, at any time and for any reason, the adoption does not work out, we require that the hound be returned to us.
We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties...
Canadian Hound Rescue is a small, not-for-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to helping homeless and abandoned hounds find loving and permanent homes as indoor pets. We mainly operate in Ontario, but have volunteers in other provinces as well. We rescue all breeds of coonhounds including the Black and Tan, Bluetick, Redbone, English, Plott Hound, and Treeing Walker Coonhounds. We also rescue Bloodhounds and hound mixes.
