We are hoping to never see puppies or kittens advertised 'Free to Good Homes' ever again, as all mix breed (and most purebred) animals should be altered. With more then 4 million animals being euthanized annually in the United States we truly have enough. At a minimum animals should be sold/adopted by the owner at the cost of vet work done, free animals means no vet work done!
For example, we will do the vet work on an entire litter of pups for $45.00 each, having them altered (spay / neutered), microchipped, vaccinated, and de-wormed. Kittens are vetted for $25 each, which includes alteration (spay / neutered), vaccinated, and de-wormed.
This, along with advertising the litter on the Internet for the litter owner, is done with no direct cost to the litter owner. The litter owner must do the entire litter, and needs to re-coup the vet work expenses for us when they place the animal.
Since this is a “with owner” placement, this (these) animal(s) may not have been tested for Fleuk/FIV.
For information on adopting one of Joann’s kittens, please call Joann at: 515-833-2936.
June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.
These cats’ adoption fees have not been set, (typically $25).
Adoption Information:
Please remember that every animal available for adoption through an A.P.E.-affiliated organization is fully-vetted for its age and only needs routine preventive care. Dogs older then 6 months of age are heartworm tested; all cats are tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FELUK/FIV). All dogs are kept on heartworm preventative. Every dog and cat is vaccinated (age appropriate), microchipped, and de-wormed, in addition to being spayed/neutered.
We are asking for interested parties to fill out a pre-adoption questionnaire prior to lining up an appointment to visit the animal(s) at the animal's home.
For more information on our adoption procedures, (such as requiring adopters to travel to central Iowa to pick the animal up when approved to adopt as A.P.E. does not ship animals or meet people half way) or to obtain a pre-adoption questionnaire to become eligible to adopt, please visit our website's Adoption Page.
Want to help, but the time is not right to adopt? You can make a tax-deductible donation to A.P.E. via PayPal.For a list of needed supplies and volunteer opportunities, please visit our website.

The mission of the Animal Protection and Education Charity, is to help place unwanted animals, accidental litters, and adoptable animals whose time has run out in local animal facilities. Furthermore, we assist humane originations in central Iowa with Spay and Neuter projects.
This is in addition to educating the public on humane training, proper nutrition, and husbandry, and the overwhelming statistics of euthanized animals throughout the United States.
