Bob-SPECIAL NEEDS's story...
Please contact Carolyn (bearcreekrescue@getgoin.net) for more information about this pet.

Bob is a 75 pound, 8 month old Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees pup that came to Pyr foster as a tiny pup from a shelter in SW AR, where he had been found abandoned in a city park. He was critically ill with sarcoptic mange, kennel cough, a resistant Para influenza, and a nearly always fatal disease, the most virulent form of neurological distemper. The first case of this severity, the canine veterinary specialist had seen, in over 25 years. He was not expected to survive, his chances were zero. But his little spirit just would not give up, so neither did we. Vigilant nursing care around the clock for many weeks, saved him, and he only has 2 systems that are not yet recovered completely. He is left with a myoclonus (muscle twitching/spasm) and tooth enamel hypoplasia (erosion).

The good news is that Theo's mental faculties are intact, he is smart, quite strikingly beautiful, the sweetest guy you'll ever meet, and loves everyone, everything. He can run like the wind, gallop like a pony, is playful and goofy, and the faster he moves, the more coordinated he is. It's important that he be allowed and encouraged to run and play, as this exercise is helping his neurological system to develop new nerve pathways to compensate for those damaged by his extreme illness. Baby steps. He will continue to improve, but the residual damage he will have as an adult is not yet known. It's so rare that any dog survives what he has, even the medical experts cannot say, as he has surprised them all thus far, and is truly a medical miracle.

Bob needs a loving, understanding family who loves him unconditionally, & does not care that he is not perfect, or that sometimes he 'bobs' up and down when he's excited and happy. He is a house trained indoor dog, with unlimited outdoor privileges. Fenced yard, home visit, veterinary reference, and adoption contract is required.

About Us: National Great Pyrenees Rescue (NGPR) is not a shelter. We are a not-for-profit, tax-exempt coalition of Pyr rescuers and rescue groups. We save Pyrs and Pyr mixes across the country and place them in approved foster homes to learn how they will interact with your family. Every dog who is fostered or adopted makes room for another Pyr coming out of a kill shelter. NGPR dogs are fostered for a minimum of two weeks or more, spayed or neutered and fully vetted before placement. NGPR will take back any dog who does not succeed in its new home. Many NGPR volunteers are members of the AKC breed club, adhere to their rescue guidelines for purebred Pyrs and apply these standards to the adoption of Pyr mixes as well. Visit www.nationalpyr.org to learn more about us, our mission and our breed.

About Our Rescue Group...
Bear Creek Equine Rescue & Sanctuary is a private, stand alone safe haven/sanctuary for unwanted equines, along with several other species. We do not, have never, nor will never euthanize for space. We accept placement of all species by private treaty only from local veterinarians' referrals, law enforcement, court seizures, and donation via owner's bequeath or written request. We have 10 different breeds here of feral & domestic horses, mules, ponies and burros from all over the US & Canada, as well as dogs, cats, llamas, cows, chickens, potbelly pigs, sheep, goats, ducks & geese, all of them rescues. We are a medical rescue and can accept animals with treatable chronic health problems or injuries. Our goal is to provide these abandoned, abused, and neglected animals with lifetime quality care, recovery, rehabilitation, and a future safe from ending up at the slaughter plant for the remainder of their natural days. When their time with us comes to an end, all animals here are given a decent, respectful burial on the farm. It's the right thing to do. We have a restricted adoption program, as most of the animals here are considered unadoptable due to age, health, or high risk safety issues resulting from earlier abuse. The equine adopters that qualify have to be very special people. We do however, network with other reputable rescues nationwide, transferring and accepting transfers when the change is in the best interest of the animal due to climate, or special treatment available at particular veterinary hospital facilities in another part of the country.
