Adopt a Pet :: Lil Max - Cole Camp, MO - Miniature Pinscher/Terrier (Unknown Type, Small) Mix

Lil Max's Info...

Breed: Miniature Pinscher/Terrier (Unknown Type, Small) Mix Color: Black - With Tan, Yellow Or Fawn Age: Adult
Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less Sex: Male

I am already neutered, housetrained, a special needs pet, up to date with shots, good with dogs, and good with cats.

Lil Max's Story...
05-16-09 Lil Max is black & tan, weighs 14 lbs., is 6 years old give or take a few months either way. He was originally a stray impounded at Cole Camp city pound, a string around his neck, a piece of cardboard with "My name is Max."

He may be purebred, he may be a mix/mutt. You may decide after you meet him, gaze into his eyes.

You may copy/paste the following into your browser to learn more about this breed:

http://dogbreedinfo.com/miniaturepinscher.htm

Max overstayed his welcome at the pound as the city policy is to impound for one week to allow the owner to reclaim their pet, then allow one week for an adopter to come forth.

Max was loved until he wasn't. He rides beautifully in a vehicle, ready for a ride when he sees the car keys come out. He prefers to be on the driver's lap so a seat belt harness or pet taxi may be a safe alternative.
He is good on the leash, good with the other fur-kids, has been cat tested. He is crate trained.

Max & Weezie are best buds at playtime!

This fur-kid is in our Senior Fur-ever & Always Program.
Our program is patterned after Love A Golden's Senior Life Program.

If you adopt this fur-kid, your original adoption donation is perpetual.
You may adopt another appropriate senior (10 years & older or special needs) fur-kid from us after this fur-kid passes to the Rainbow Bridge, becoming an Angel Dog.

Max's original story may be found on our Happy Tails page, under "FOUND! Max!" on the name line.

Max is going to need a second opinion on his skin issues. A skin scraping was negative. He has completed a round of antibiotics for what appeared to be a bacterial infection. He has been on special shampoos, also special food of fowl, fruits & veggies also potato & duck. He is making some improvement, just want to see if anything else may be done for him.

With his skin condition he needs great care and not hit and miss or not at all.....

Once a second opinion has been obtained we will post the results. We are going to be seeking an adopter that LOVES this breed, is able to provide the level of care Max needs.

05-18 Max does very well in the shower with his goat milk shampoo, Vitamin E capsules taken orally & Vitamin E cream rubbed on his neck, other spots on his body. He wraps his little paws around a wrist, snuggles into a neck, thoroughly enjoying the massaging.
Oh how we wish we knew his background. Someone took such good care of him until his skin issues surfaced. He is such a well behaved little fur-man.

05-20 Lil Max began his afternoon with a brief stop by Rosebud Gifts & Fabric to see if they had any min pin items for the pet owner.

Lil Max then visited Doc with all of his vet records & documentation of his past few weeks of care, taking Allan along for the diagnosis, prognosis.
Doc concurs with all that has been done. He also explained that it appears the flea allergy left untreated resulted in the bacterial infection, scarring that may NEVER improve. Other spots could be from stress & definitely all the scratching produced stress on his little body. The lymph nodes are not swollen. He also explained other possible causes. We may never know the exact cause as Lil Max simply grins, remains silent.

Doc further believes him to be older than 7 as his eyes have the start of cataracts.
Doc also found Max has a carnasial abscess on his right side. He wants him on a round of antibiotics for a week, then return for the removal of the tooth, complete dental will be done at that time. He is then to remain on antibiotics for a week following the extraction. The tooth will need cut in two places, then pulled out. It is not loose, just the root infected. Poor little guy! He is such a good boy to have such a medical challenge.

Lil Max will be our own K-9 Phantom of the Opera. He may wear cute little outfits that will help cover us his scarred body with missing hair. We will continue with the goat milk baths & massage, also continue with the supplements, preventatives.
Max has been microchipped by AVID.
Max has been doing very well on his house manners.

You may copy/paste the following link into your browser to learn more about carnasial abscess or you may do a google search for more info. about his condition:

05-20 We have this note from a volunteer that visited all the new arrivals today:
" The furry ones are so neat. Your little chi pack is so cute. Tickles is a love, his coat is beautiful and he has such a nice disposition. Pooky is as pretty as ever and her turned up nose is adorable. KiKi WOW!!! What a dolly, a real charmer. I would not have recognized Baby Doll she looks so much better and even licked my hand. She certainly gets along with the younger kids well. I don't need to tell you what I think of Bryan - coat like velvet and eyes to die for. He is so sweet and loves everyone. Weezie wanted a little attention but Bryan kept getting in her way. ....she is a beauty and I don't why she hasn't found a home. ........ Weezie has a great personality.
Barbie remains Barbie and good luck with her. She adores you but ignored me. She is very cute and lively. Cricket is such a sweet friendly little girl. Max is a very nice dog. He minds well and is well behaved. His bark is certainly loud!"

05-26 Lil Max went for his dental this AM. We went to pick him up in the PM. Alas, he will need to remain overnight.
Doc had done blood work & had some concerns. We went over the test results. His dental will be done in the AM.
Without a known history on Lil Max there were questions from the vet that we were unable to answer. It's a bit of detective work by the vet to determine all that may be going on with Lil Max.
His disposition is fantastic, clinic staff LOVES him!
Please cross your paws that all goes well tomorrow with Max's dental. They are aware of his past episode with the reaction to the anesthesia. His file is documented accordingly.

05-27 THANKS for the crossed paws!
Just notified late AM that Max came through his dental & extraction just fine, is becoming alert, may go home early PM.
Happy Dancing in the Valley of 7 Bells for his speedy recovery.

Late PM - Max is recovering nicely. Had he been a cat with 9 lives, he would have used up 2 already! He has such a strong will to live.
Doc gave him a Vitamin K shot so his blood would clot. He will remain on antibiotics for 7 - 10 days following his extraction. His teeth are now pearly white!
Max showed off his pearly whites when he was left alone in the vehicle & someone approached it. He is a great little watch-dog! He puts folks back 10 paces!

Once back on-site he took his meds, nosed open his crate door piled with pillows, hopped in & dozed off. He is such a very good fur-boy!
We did get a comment from someone in the parking lot of the clinic that he may be a Manchester Terrier. We are clueless & Max's background is still a mystery. He may be whatever you want him to be just as long as he gets the best home possible to love him just as he is. He may be scarred physically yet his emotions show total trust & good behavior.

05-30 Max continues to stay the course. He takes his meds, has his favorite pillow to curl upon.
Someone truly loved Max! He comes when called, he jumps up to be held, then wraps his little paws about a wrist, snuggles his nose into a neck. His disposition is wonderful!
When Max hears the jingle of car keys he is ready for a ride. "Oh please take me!" He is full of self confidence, struts when he walks like he owns the world. Good little boy! For the right family he will be a dream come true.

06-05 While Max does co-exist with a cat he may do best in a home without kittens. He got a little too excited today with T.C.'s tail, too much temptation as T.C. waved it in front of his face. Nearly yanked T.C. off the counter!

06-11 Lil Max has become a bit of a "watch-dog" greeting visitors with a bark. He doesn't offer to bite, just shows his pearly whites, "I'm keeping my eyes on you!"
He is getting a fish oil capsule every morning, Vitamin E cream on his neck where the skin tends to get rough. The skin cream keeps his skin soft.

Please do not let the adoption fee or his ongoing care prevent you from adopting him. Our fees are flexible for the PAWfect adopter that is willing to give some TLC to this little fur-man. He will reward you with total devotion.

Rescue Group Info...

About Our Rescue Group...
We are a small, foster home based rescue, licensed by the Mo. Dept of Agriculture in June 2004. We specialize in senior dogs.

We also offer Hospice care for dying dogs as space permits.

This site is dedicated to Max, rescued by Carolyn, and Lady, rescued by Connie. Both were senior dogs that were in kill shelters and were "Naturals" when visiting the care center. Because of them, this rescue was born.

We handle no more than two large senior dogs at a time. All of the dogs are completely vetted including but not limited to altered, vaccinated, dental & microchipped before being placed for adoption.

Most, yet not all, visit care centers to become familiar with medical equipment. The goal is to get the senior pets into senior homes or non-senior homes with a low energy lifestyle.

Our goal for 2007 is to have a few small dogs, under 25 lbs., 1 to 6 years of age, in our foster homes. These small dogs will be closely observed for 2 weeks before being adopted out. This will allow us, hopefully, to notice and care for any medical problems or behavior problems that may arise. Their adoptions will help provide funds for the special needs of the large senior dogs that wait longer to find that special fur-ever home.

We are working on the Mighty Mutt Youth Program. This program will focus on small, young mixed breed dogs that are good with children. After all, how will children get experience with dogs unless they have a first pet? We need to educate the young people of today to make the future better for the dogs of tomorrow.

Mixed-breed dogs make excellent pets and lifelong friends. As a general rule, they enjoy better health and temperament than purebred animals. Unfortunately, a great number of these wonderful pets await their KILL DATE in shelters around the country. They are often not adopted because they are not a purebred dog. Thus, many are DESTROYED! The goal of the Mighty Mutt Youth Program is to change that by:

1. Locating kill shelter dogs that interact well with other animals and children

2. Rescuing these young dogs before they are killed and get them to the veterinarian

3. Uniting the right family with the right Mighty Mutt

4. Educating the young person and his/her family with guidelines for responsible pet ownership and proper preventative care for pets

We operate solely on donations. We can always use towels, sheets, baby blankets, shampoo and grooming supplies. For those of you that love to garage sale and shop in thrift stores, we could use gently used collars, leashes, bowls, any pet supplies. You may mail them to the address shown below. Your donations will be used to save the lives of pets and provide veterinary care.

In 2009 we became a 501 (c) 3. Your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We send a monthly newsletter and will be glad to add you to our list. We will also send a year end financial statement upon request. We do not pay for advertising or salaries. We have wonderful volunteers providing foster care, assisting with care center visits with the pets, computer work and fund raisers. The young children who volunteer today to help with the pets will grow up to be animal lovers and advocates. We have an obedience instructor willing to work with you so that you may keep your dog. Word of mouth in a small town spreads like wildfire. Folks love old dogs. We truly adore ALL the volunteers!

Come Meet Our Pets...
We are in a rural area five miles from historic downtown Cole Camp. Some of the pets may be in foster homes. We do not have a kennel as all of these pets live in a home environment. We are open 7 days a week by appointment.

Cole Camp is located in Benton County. Cole Camp is southeast of Kansas City about 2 hours, northeast of Springfield about 2 hours and southwest of Columbia about 2 hours. Cole Camp is located on 52 Highway, a short drive from Truman Lake and the Truman Dam. Please check out Cole Camp at www.colecampmo.com There are many places to visit while in the area looking for a pet, and some of the businesses are downright pet friendly. The Harris Guest House is a B&B which encourages well behaved pets to spend the night.
Our Adoption Process...
Our goal is to find the right placement for each pet. We never want them to be hungry or unwanted again. We will answer every question to the very best of our knowledge and always be honest when it comes to the animal's suitability for a home. We want to make sure that you get the pet that will suit your special needs and that you will be able to meet the special needs of your pet.

Senior citizens and disabled receive a discount.
We also offer a discount to those in uniform keeping us safe.

Land of the free because of the brave.
May our Lord wrap His Bubble of Protection about those that serve

May He comfort those left behind waiting, worrying & grieving.

The adoption fee ranges from $150 to $300.

The fee is based upon veterinary care, age & size of dog.
In addition as noted above we do make special arrangements for Senior citizens, the disabled and our military families.

The higher adoption fee on the younger small dogs helps care for the older dogs that take longer to find fur-ever homes.

Our adoption process begins with the e-mail or phone call to us. We will be asking for your complete name, address, telephone number, your veterinarian contact information and at least two personal references. We will then call you to ask a series of questions.

We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties...
We serve Cole Camp, Benton County, Missouri and surrounding areas. We do adopt out of state as long as the adopter comes to our location or to the foster home.
