Walter will be moving to his new foster home shortly.
Walter (previously Dozer, but nothing Dozey about this beautiful boy!)
Walter is handsome, purebred male Bloodhound, approximately 2 - 4 years old. Walter is fully crate trained, walks well on lead using a Haltie and knows some basic commands such as “sit”, “stay” and “come”. Walter has been temperament tested and is a Happy Boy!! He's a very friendly boy who loves everyone he meets. Walter would make a fun addition to any family.
Poor Walter lost his only home when his owners fell upon difficult times and could no longer afford to feed such a big, active boy. Walter wound up in a high kill shelter before CHR came to his rescue. Now Walter needs a family to call his own to complete his rescue journey.
Walter lived in a foster home with two other female Bloodhounds and enjoyed their company. However, when this home added a male Mastiff to their family, there were issues between the two males. Walter would be best in a home with a female dog(s) or as an only dog with someone home most of the time and where he could have the security he needs to be fed separately from other dogs. Walter is crate trained and did fine when left alone in the past, however more recently he has demonstrated some issues when left alone as an only dog. It’s unsure whether Walter needs the companionship of another canine when left alone or if it’s a temporary result of all the recent upheaval in his life and he just needs a bit of time to find the security he’s so desperately needing.
Due to lack of foster homes, CHR had no choice but to board Walter in a kennel. Walter is sad and confused and really needs a foster home committed to offering him the security he needs. Better yet, if you are that perfect home for Walter, this loving boy will not disappoint you!!
Please Note:
We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our o-nline adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. Filling out our application does not obligate you to adopt in any way. It does, however, help us to determine if the dog that your interested in would be a good match for your family and lifestyle. All of our dogs are fully vetted. They have been wormed, vaccinated, altered, microchipped and heartworm tested and on prevention.
ADOPTION FEE: $350.00
LOCATION: Walter is currently boarding in Smithville Ontario. Transportation to his foster or forever home can be arranged. Don't let distance deter you! If you would like to give this beautiful boy a forever home please fill out our on line adoption application at ADOPTION APPLICATION
Bloodhounds require A SECURELY FENCED YARD. Invisible/underground electric fences don't work on these dogs. They get on a scent and are totally oblivious to anything else around them.....including traffic. Bloodhounds don't tie or chain well either. They are fine for apartment living as long as they get enough exercise. All of our dogs are adopted to be 'in-the-house' family members. Bloodhounds are not for everyone, they can't roam free and can't be walked off leash.

Canadian Hound Rescue is dedicated to promoting responsible hound ownership. Many of the hounds that end up in shelters or rescue are abandoned hunting dogs that were previously tied to a doghouse outside for most of the year, only to be let loose during hunting season. We believe that no hound should have to suffer such a fate, and will place hounds as indoor pets only. Since many of our hounds have never lived in a house before, all dogs are initially placed in foster homes where they are housetrained and learn basic house manners. While in foster care our hounds are also spayed or neutered, brought up to date on vaccinations, and provided with any necessary medical care. Finally, their temperament and personality are evaluated so that we can find the best possible match between each individual hound and its adoptive home.
If you would like to meet one of our hounds please contact us as they are located in foster homes throughout Ontario. We always need more foster homes. Fostering is essential to Canadian Hound Rescue in saving hounds and keeping our rescue going. The more homes we have, the more dogs we can save.
Our Adoption Process...
All adoptive homes are required to go through a screening process that includes a telephone interview, filling out an application, reference checks and a home visit. An adoption fee is required to offset some of the costs incurred in caring for and re-homing each hound. Canadian Hound Rescue remains committed to each animal for the rest of its life and if, at any time and for any reason, the adoption does not work out, we require that the hound be returned to us.
We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties...
Canadian Hound Rescue is a small, not-for-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to helping homeless and abandoned hounds find loving and permanent homes as indoor pets. We mainly operate in Ontario, but have volunteers in other provinces as well. We rescue all breeds of coonhounds including the Black and Tan, Bluetick, Redbone, English, Plott Hound, and Treeing Walker Coonhounds. We also rescue Bloodhounds and hound mixes.
