As you said, pitbulls are amazing creatures. I've loved all animals, especially dogs, from the moment I was born and have always fought for them. The time I've spent with Sugar has turned me into a full on pit fanatic. I truly think they are the sweetest dogs of any breed. What a cruel irony. Just being in Sugar's presence makes me weep...thinking of all she's suffered through and what an amazing heart she still have moves me unequivocally.
I would adopt her if I didn't have 2 chihuahuas. If my dogs were larger, I would definitely do it. But it's a little risky with the small ones. SO I've been trying everything I can to find her a home, either interim or permanent.
This girl deserves the lovingest, best home.
Who is Sugar?
Sugar is a pitbull...probably about 3 years old. The story goes like this: one day about a year and a half ago, Jane Simon, a girl about my age (late 20s, early 30s), was in a Los Angeles shelter, working on a feral cat program when a man came in with Sugar on the end of a rope (literally and figuratively). She was skinny, trembling, and bore acid burns that were so deep, her bones showed through. Upon seeing her, Jane immediately burst into tears and knew Sugar needed a home and intense healing right away. Jane took her home with her that day.
She contacted the rescue organization she had been working through, and they pledged their support...so Jane forged ahead. She took Sugar to the vet, whereupon they discovered the acid burns were only part of the story. Sugar's ears had been cut away with scissors, and her insides were completely infected--evidence that she was used as a breeding factory, and that she had undergone at least 2 rounds of back-alley c sections. The puppies were literally ripped from her.
As the doctors and Jane worked together to get Sugar patched up, the bills mounted up. Jane lived at home with her supportive family, and they were all counting on the financial support promised by the rescue. They never got it. The rescue organization did not make good on their word, and Jane and her family were left to their own devices.
They could've given up on this dog. But they didn't.
And what they've since been able to do is nothing short of miraculous. Her scars are a fraction of their original size, she's at a healthy weight, and her coat is a beautiful blue-gray color.
But the true miracle here?
Sugar has never turned on humans. Somehow, this dog has continued to love and continued to trust...beyond my own human comprehension. And, to me, that's what is so special about Sugar.
The thing is, Jane went into this over a year ago figuring she'd have plenty of time to find Sugar a home. But now time is nearly up. You see, Jane is going to going to grad school in Denver. She is studying animal therapy, which means she will have many dogs in and out of her home. Also, Denver has a hateful, awful breed ban on Pits.
I've been working with Jane on this for quite awhile (since the winter)...we have even made and and are selling shirts as a fundraiser/awareness campaign.
The situation has now turned critical.
There is one young man who is interested in adopting Sugar, but he is relocating to LA for a job and is still in negotations for this job. That means he is unsettled and living with a friend. That means he is not equipped to take Sugar.
Jane MUST leave for school next Thursday, 8/20. And Sugar cannot come with her.
Right now, Jane does not know what she'll do with her. At this point, it is looking like she will be surrendered to a shelter, as I mentioned.
PLEASE. We need an angel to step forward to foster Sugar until her potential dad is settled or to adopt her outright.
Her life is now on the line.
She has come too far for it to end like this.
PLEASE. If you can't take her, please forward this on. If you have any leads, call me at 310.339.0052 at any hour.
Thank you,
Sarah Sypniewski
