Otis's story...
Personality
I am a smart, attentive, very affectionate dog, always near my humans. I want to do whatever the people in my family want to do, whether it’s playing with toys, working in the yard, or relaxing on the couch. I pay attention to everything people do or say, and learn really quickly.
When I’m at home, I am a perfect dog. However, out in public, I do not have great manners. I bark at people walking or on bikes, and I’m learning how to greet them calmly. With the help of ABRT’s behavior staff, my foster mom is working with me so I can learn that I’m safe no matter where I go, but it takes time.

What are the dog's favorite toys or things to do?

I love to play fetch or tug or wrestle. When I’m outside, I like to chase the squirrels or watch through the fence to see what the neighbors are doing. I love to snuggle in a person’s lap. And I love to ride in the car to a park where we can go for a walk, or even just to go along on errands. At home, I like to carry a bone with me so I always have something to do in my down time. I’m not possessive of it, but I just like to have a project handy if I need one. I’m a busy dog, and know how to keep myself occupied, even while I’m watching what everyone else is doing.

My forever home:

I need to live with people who are committed to working with me on my training, so I can learn to socialize nicely with new people. I secretly want to live with someone who will pamper me and let me be the absolute center of their attention, but it would be healthier for me to be part of a larger animal family, and I do live nicely with other dogs or cats. The humans around me should be adults. I can be unpredictable around children.

Socialization

Does the dog like cats? Live with cats?

I live with a cat in my foster home, and we run and romp and wrestle together, gently of course, and sometimes we just relax, laying down side by side. I might scare a cat that isn’t used to dogs though, because I’m small and can move fast and startle a cat.

Does the dog like other dogs?

Yes I do like all other dogs of all sizes, as long as we are introduced in a calm way so that I can remember how to be polite. Once I know a dog, I like to romp, wrestle, and play.

Does the dog like kids?

I haven't been around kids much, and new people make me nervous, so I'm a little too unpredictable for my people to think of me as safe with kids.

Should the dog be placed with other pets and/or kids?

I love being an only dog, but I would probably be happiest living with another dog or two. When I'm the only dog, I try to take over my human's every activity. Other dogs help me keep things in perspective, so I can remember that I am not the Prince of the Entire Universe. I can do well with cats, with some human guidance when we first meet. I should live in a home without children.

Training and Behavior

Housebroken?
Yes.

Crate trained?
Yes. I go immediately to my crate when told to, and I love my crate when I want to be alone.

Has the dog had any training?
I am very smart and like to learn new things. I have gone through Foundation Class at All Breed Rescue & Training, as well as many private sessions.

Does the dog escape the yard? Dig? Bark excessively? Anything else?

I like to think it's my job to protect my humans and my home, so I bark when people walk by my yard on the sidewalk. I don't try to leave the yard or dig.

Does the dog ride well in the car?

I absolutely love car rides, but I can get excited and jump into the driver's lap. I don't sit still in the car much, because there's so much going on out the windows. In store parking lots, I'll bark at people if they come too close to my human's car.

Is the dog food aggressive? No.

Fearful of anything? My barking at new people is probably a fear reaction.

Health

I'm very healthy, but I'm working on losing some weight, because I got pretty pudgy at my last home.
