SCARLET aka Little Red. Scarlet is an adorable small-to-medium sized red and white 12-month old border collie mix. Her coat is a gorgeous red with hints of blond in it. Her fur is very lush. She has stunning green eyes – which are quite rare. We are not sure what she is mixed with, but she looks very border collie. Little Red has turned into quite the hoot – she is very agile and likes to climb up to the top of my Coleman pop-up camper (which is closed) in my back driveway and look at the world – when you’re in the front driveway, you can see her flush with the top of the gate and she just looks around very regal like – no barking at all. She even brings her favorite stuffed teddy bear up there sometimes and wrestles with him. She’s quite the clown – she likes to submerse her face into a water bucket – all the way up to her ears – for a few seconds and then run around like a crazy fool afterwards. She also likes to lay in the kiddie pool sometimes, but is not constantly going in and getting all wet. She is not hyper at all and a medium energy dog. Sometimes, she’ll grab onto her tail and spins circles for a minute or two – with very Oksana Baiul like form! Every once in a while, she’ll partake in some shadow stomping – although I’ve never seen this, but my roommate has. She is learning to play ball. Her house manners have come a long way as this is a dog that we believe was not socialized at all, probably just left in the back yard. She used to be quite fearful of people, but has come so far in her foster home. She loves to play with the other dogs and is adorable with them – she is not a fighter at all - a very omega dog. She rarely barks, although sometimes does not like to be away from you – as in if the back screen door is shut, she might voice her desire to have the option of being able to come see you. Scarlett walks quite well on a leash and rides in the car perfectly. She also kennels up very well. She is not destructive, which I find surprising based on her age and curiosity. The only thing she does is chew on a newspaper and shred paper once in a while. Sometimes new people make her nervous, but once she bonds, she’s quite the girl. She adores men and is very loving, curious and sweet. She is lovely to take a nap with. Because of the way she can stay so silently focused I think there’s a lot of intelligence in this girl’s head - I think she really has the ability to learn. This will continue to take time though because of her past. She will need an adopter who will be patient with her and will remain cognizance of the fact that she was treated poorly in the past. I don’t have any cats, but I think she would be fine with them. She is fine with my cockatoo. Scarlett is being fostered in Torrance
Border Collies in Need, Inc. was founded in 2007 by a group of non-paid volunteers who have come together to rescue and foster Border Collies (BCs). Border Collies in Need is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing Border Collies who are abandoned, neglected, or abused, and placing them into permanent, loving homes. Our dogs come to us from a variety of different sources such as City and County Shelters and strays. We also accept dogs from private individuals, or offer assistance to those needing help to re-home their family pets, who for whatever reason must relinquish their Border Collie(s).
Our ultimate purpose is to match homeless or potentially homeless Border Collies with loving permanent families, specifically interested in the breed. We will accomplish this by providing temporary foster care, necessary and reasonable veterinary treatment, temperament evaluations of the dogs, and interviewing suitability of potential adopters, which includes a “home-check.” Each dog is provided with all necessary and reasonable veterinary treatment, vaccinations, sterilization, and micro-chipping.
Border Collies in Need recognizes the need to expand its horizons beyond the basic rescue duties, and network closely with regional Border Collie clubs which includes herding, agility, and flyball activities for sport and competition. Border Collies In Need recognizes that many regional Border Collie clubs do not have funds to support rescue even though they are the ones who are looked upon as the caretakers of the breed.
It is through the mutual admiration and respect of this breed that will encourage awareness to their plight by breed education, by promoting rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption.
You can meet our beautiful border collies either by visiting us at an adoption event or by appointment. Our Adoption Process...
The dogs in our program are fully tested and evaluated for temperament, sterilized, micro chipped, and all required vaccinations have been administered prior to adoption.
In order to adopt a dog from BCs in Need, Inc., you must first submit an Adoption Application. You will be contacted by one of our volunteers to discuss your application and the BC traits you desire for your companion. Once your application has been approved, you will be eligible to adopt.
To submit your application, you may apply online. The more information that you can give us on your application helps us to determine if the dog is the right match for you. Additionally, we may recommend others for your consideration that would fit into your lifestyle. We strive to mutually match our dogs into forever homes with adopters. You will be notified by email or telephone when your application has been approved.
We schedule adoptions by appointment only or you can visit us at local adoption events which are listed on our Events Page. If you have another dog, you will need to bring it with you to see if they are compatible with one another. We will do a home check, however, pictures of your home, yard, fencing, gates, and where the dog will sleep are encouraged.
