Luke's story...
08-23-09 This little feller we tagged as Luke. He appears to be a mix of shih tzu & dachshund.
Cool hand Luke or should that be Cool Paw Luke?

This fur-kid has come from a small rural pound.
They have a one week hold policy, then the animals are put down by a vet clinic on Monday. Pulled at the 11th hour he escaped from Death Row. He rode to freedom with two of our foster parents visiting in the area, dosed with Capstar to rid him of hitchhiking fleas!
He does well on the leash, loves to be held, will give kisses, evidently loved at some time in his past.

He's a handsome mix of shades of a box of chocolates, deep dark brown, milk chocolate, reddish chocolate, light mocha, cream centers. He is about a year & a half old, weighs 10 lbs plus a wiggle.
He has been recently groomed, groomer easy to locate in a small town. The groomer was able to give us some background on him which will be furnished to a qualified adopter.

This fur-kid will be placed in foster care with Andrea as soon as his vet work has been completed.

The foster updates on his/her likes & dislikes will help you know if this fur-kid is suitable for your home.

The foster has a very important job, evaluating, loving, letting go to make room for another fur-kid at risk.

No fence! No problem! We prefer dedicated leash walkers.
Out of state adopter? No problem! You must come take delivery of your pup. The foster mom will place him/her in your arms, see the glow of joy on your face.

08-23PM Luke needs some vehicle manners. He was quiet for part of the ride to rescue yet anxious to see where he was heading. He wasn't happy in a pet taxi, no way to check out the scenery. We would suggest a seat belt harness for safety until he is accustomed to more vehicle trips.

He did fairly well in the shower. He had a deep massaging flea/tick bath to rid him of any dead hitchhikers.
Wormed & ears cleaned & treated he was then able to join the other fur-kids, gets along well thus far with everyone.

His appointment will be made for neuter, vaccinations, an AVID microchip, then he goes into foster care.

A curious little scamp. He has come to put his paws up to check for e-mails. No one is missing him, no ID on his collar, no microchip. Happy little fur-feller, just bounced around a lot over the past few days.
After checking out everything he was content to be in a crate on a soft pillow, ponder the day's events & how lucky he was to avoid the date with Dr. Death.
It was a lot of TEAMwork (Together Everyone Achieves Much) to get this little guy to safety. Word went out, volunteers mobilized, the race was on to get him to safety. He certainly is a lovely little feller, playful, happy, way too young to end life so soon. He should do fine with older children that have been taught kindness to pets.

08-24 Luke slept quietly in a crate on a soft pillow all night. Out first thing he did his duty. He may be housebroken yet we will observe him a few days longer. Thus far no accidents.

He is going to need a dedicated leash walker or privacy fence. He has no problem scaling a 3' high fence. He also has no problem jumping over a baby gate.
His first jump was to get on a lap, give kisses ( He may have been saying "Thanks for getting me out of jail, good bath, good night's sleep." ), lie quietly sharing a chair to check on e-mails. He's a good back warmer if your chair will accommodate him & you.

This is an active youngster as you would expect for his breed & age. Yet, he also is very good on a lap, loves to cuddle, loves to be brushed. If you want an active, happy, little fella then look no further than Cool Paw Luke.

Early afternoon & he rode with Barbi to get vaccinations. Barbi did her best to show him proper vehicle manners.
He is now fully vaccinated (since we had no proof of previous vaccinations) & has been implanted with an AVID microchip. One extra measure of security should he jump over a tall building in a single bound, end up in doggy jail again.

08-25 Luke rode very nicely in the vehicle, his head on his chauffeur's leg, totally relaxed. It didn't take many little trips for him to know he was safe.
Andrea will pick up Luke to foster from the vet.

PM phone chat with Andrea. Luke got car sick on the ride home, effects of the anesthesia. He has gone under the bed to hide & recover from the trauma of surgery. He should be fine within the next couple of days.
He has been introduced to the cats, so far fine since he is groggy.

08-26 A phone chat with Andrea. Luke is not doing well. She will watch him another 24 hours then he may need a re-check. Some fur-kids take surgery harder than others.

08-27 PM call from Andrea. Luke seems to be doing better, no longer hiding, she is able to gently pick him up.

About Our Rescue Group...
We are a small, foster home based rescue, licensed by the Mo. Dept of Agriculture in June 2004. We specialize in senior dogs.

We also offer Hospice care for dying dogs as space permits.

This site is dedicated to Max, rescued by Carolyn, and Lady, rescued by Connie. Both were senior dogs that were in kill shelters and were "Naturals" when visiting the care center. Because of them, this rescue was born.

We handle no more than two large senior dogs at a time. All of the dogs are completely vetted including but not limited to altered, vaccinated, dental & microchipped before being placed for adoption.

Most, yet not all, visit care centers to become familiar with medical equipment. The goal is to get the senior pets into senior homes or non-senior homes with a low energy lifestyle.

Our goal for 2007 is to have a few small dogs, under 25 lbs., 1 to 6 years of age, in our foster homes. These small dogs will be closely observed for 2 weeks before being adopted out. This will allow us, hopefully, to notice and care for any medical problems or behavior problems that may arise. Their adoptions will help provide funds for the special needs of the large senior dogs that wait longer to find that special fur-ever home.

We are working on the Mighty Mutt Youth Program. This program will focus on small, young mixed breed dogs that are good with children. After all, how will children get experience with dogs unless they have a first pet? We need to educate the young people of today to make the future better for the dogs of tomorrow.

Mixed-breed dogs make excellent pets and lifelong friends. As a general rule, they enjoy better health and temperament than purebred animals. Unfortunately, a great number of these wonderful pets await their KILL DATE in shelters around the country. They are often not adopted because they are not a purebred dog. Thus, many are DESTROYED! The goal of the Mighty Mutt Youth Program is to change that by:

1. Locating kill shelter dogs that interact well with other animals and children

2. Rescuing these young dogs before they are killed and get them to the veterinarian

3. Uniting the right family with the right Mighty Mutt

4. Educating the young person and his/her family with guidelines for responsible pet ownership and proper preventative care for pets

We operate solely on donations. We can always use towels, sheets, baby blankets, shampoo and grooming supplies. For those of you that love to garage sale and shop in thrift stores, we could use gently used collars, leashes, bowls, any pet supplies. You may mail them to the address shown below. Your donations will be used to save the lives of pets and provide veterinary care.

In 2009 we became a 501 (c) 3. Your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We send a monthly newsletter and will be glad to add you to our list. We will also send a year end financial statement upon request. We do not pay for advertising or salaries. We have wonderful volunteers providing foster care, assisting with care center visits with the pets, computer work and fund raisers. The young children who volunteer today to help with the pets will grow up to be animal lovers and advocates. We have an obedience instructor willing to work with you so that you may keep your dog. Word of mouth in a small town spreads like wildfire. Folks love old dogs. We truly adore ALL the volunteers!

Come Meet Our Pets...
We are in a rural area five miles from historic downtown Cole Camp. Some of the pets may be in foster homes. We do not have a kennel as all of these pets live in a home environment. We are open 7 days a week by appointment.

Cole Camp is located in Benton County. Cole Camp is southeast of Kansas City about 2 hours, northeast of Springfield about 2 hours and southwest of Columbia about 2 hours. Cole Camp is located on 52 Highway, a short drive from Truman Lake and the Truman Dam. Please check out Cole Camp at www.colecampmo.com There are many places to visit while in the area looking for a pet, and some of the businesses are downright pet friendly. The Harris Guest House is a B&B which encourages well behaved pets to spend the night.
Our Adoption Process...
Our goal is to find the right placement for each pet. We never want them to be hungry or unwanted again. We will answer every question to the very best of our knowledge and always be honest when it comes to the animal's suitability for a home. We want to make sure that you get the pet that will suit your special needs and that you will be able to meet the special needs of your pet.

Senior citizens and disabled receive a discount.
We also offer a discount to those in uniform keeping us safe.
