About Our Shelter...
The Woodford Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal organization located in Versailles, Kentucky. We provide shelter and care to the homeless and unwanted animals in Woodford County, surrounding counties, as well as animals from other states.

We have welcomed thousands of animals every year since 1975 and strive to find good, loving homes for all of them. A careful screening process helps us match the right animals to the right adoptive homes.

With no government funding, we are completely dependent on private contributions to continue to provide care to over one thousand animals each year. In 2007, the Woodford Humane Society found homes for 90% of our animals! The national average is around 25%. Our mission is to promote the well-being of animals through S.A.V.E: Spay/Neuter, Adopt, Volunteer and Educate.

In 2002, we joined a nationwide campaign called No More Homeless Pets. The mission of this effort is "to help bring about a time when every cat and dog that’s ever born can be guaranteed a good life with a loving family." At the Woodford Humane Society, we are striving to accomplish this mission through four areas, nicknamed SAVE: Spay/Neuter, Adopt, Volunteer, and Educate.

At any given time, we are home to approximately 200 animals available for adoption. Adoption counselors are on staff to assist with the selection of a new pet. We maintain a "wish book" for people seeking a particular breed and let them know when a match has been made.

Adoption fees include spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations and deworming while at our Adoption Center, a distemper shot, kennel cough vaccine, feline leukemia and FIV screening for cats, a coupon for a free rabies shot, a free veterinary checkup and dog training DVD.

We provide counseling and offer advice for topics such as obedience training, housebreaking, helping your pet adapt to a new home and other behavioral issues.

Our open-door policy means that we take in animals in need, regardless of their temperament, health, age or breed so long as we have the room to accommodate them. The Woodford Humane Society strives to find each and every orphaned pet a good and loving home. All of our animals are evaluated based on health, known history and temperament before being placed for adoption. We get to know our animals well and provide the enrichment and the playtime they need to stay happy.

Adoptable animals are held for as long as health, behavior and space permit. We have no standard set time for adoptable animals to find a new home, in fact some have stayed in our care for over a year as they await their new home.

Owner surrendered animals are by appointment. This ensures that we have available space and reduces stress for everyone. Please call us at 859.873.5491 to make an appointment.

All animals received must pass an evaluation based on their health, known history and temperament before being placed for adoption.
