Hi! My name is Thurston and I am brand new to Almost Home Az Rescue. Very little is known about my past, but the nice volunteers here have a few puzzle peices to work with...
Listening to my foster mom recount the day she saw me at the shelter is alittle tough to hear. She talks about the horrific stench that surrounded me. Tears well up in her eyes when she tells the part about seeing a tiny bully, completely covered in his own feces and urine. Sometimes she leaves out the part about my eyes being completely crusted and sealed shut because it breaks her heart to think of how scary it must have been for me to be in the dark, surrounded by all the crazy noises and smells. She always tells about how long and narled my toenails were, that they were growing back into my feet, and how it must have really hurt to walk. This usually segways into how much she adores me :-P
Thank you Sergio for not thinking twice about letting me ride home in your truck that first day! I know that it STILL stinks and you never even complained! You are a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful human! Thank you for helping to save my life :-)
Now, at first glance, you may not even notice that I am missing half of my lower lip and the front part of my jaw because I am so dang cute! Alittle more obvious is the 1-2 inch split in my cheek on the same side and my cloudy blue shrivled eye. All these old wounds are on the same side of my wrinkly little face... coincidence? Probally not.
I am a little fella, weighing in at about 40lbs. I am solid white, but my skin and fur is stained brown on my legs and bum area from being covered in my excretements for so very long. I have urine burns on my legs and belly, and my bum is oozing and raw for very similair reasons. I have absolutely no control over some of my bodily functions and an entire team of Veterinarians are working very hard to figure out why. I am currently on medication to make me as comfortable as possible and fight the raging internal infections that are causing me to bleed from my bladder and bowels. Did I mention my ears are infected? Luckily, Almost Home is able to give me 'round the clock' care and doesn't mind changing my diapers 10+ times a day! When I am healthy enough, I will need a dental, neuter, mutiple teeth removed, and double Entropian surgery.
Thurston is truely an inspiration to our entire team at AHAzR. He never complains or protests. He is eternally patient. He gets along with everyone and everything. Fingers crossed and good thoughts that we can help this sweet soul.

Do you adopt out of the state of AZ? ABSOLUTELY! BUT ONE OF OUR REQUIREMENTS IS A HOME VISIT AND WE MAY NOT HAVE A VOLUNTEER IN YOUR STATE. Any other way we can meet one of your rescues? IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND AN EVENT, YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION (FIRST STEP) AND RECEIVE A HOME VISIT (LAST STEP) - THERE ARE STEPS IN BETWEEN! ONLY APPROVED APPLICANTS WILL BE ABLE TO MEET OUR RESCUES OUTSIDE OF ADOPTION EVENTS...WE CHOOSE NOT TO DISRUPT OUR FOSTER HOMES WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE 'JUST LOOKING'.
Why does it seem that most of your dogs are 'pending' or 'adopted'? By the time I see a rescue I'm interested in and start to fill out the application, they are no longer available! IF YOU HAVE YOUR HEART SET ON A SPECIFIC RESCUE, YOU MAY HAVE YOUR HEART BROKEN. OUR PROCESS IS QUICK, AND WE HAVE A GROWING WAITING LIST OF APPROVED APPLICANTS. THOSE ON THE WAITING LIST GET TO SEE OUR NEW RESCUES BEFORE WE POST THEM FOR ADOPTION AND START TO TAKE NEW APPLICATIONS.
Can I apply for a specific rescue? ABSOLUTELY! IT'S HARD NOT TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE PICTURES OF OUR RESCUES, BUT IT'S IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND THAT NOT ALL DOGS WILL MATCH ALL HOMES - JUST LIKE ALL HOMES WON'T MATCH ALL DOGS. THE FOSTER HOME KNOWS THEIR RESCUE BEST AND WHAT TYPE OF HOME WILL BEST SUIT THEIR FOSTER. IF YOU HAVE SPECIFICS ABOUT COLOR, AGE, ETC. WE SUGGEST THAT YOU START THE APPROVAL PROCESS SO WE CAN FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH!

We are a private, volunteer, non-profit 501(c)3 organization. We are dedicated to the rescue of unwanted, neglected, and abandoned pets. We specialize in boxers, but for the perfect home we can help you find the perfect pet, or point you to a rescue who can. We provide food, shelter, medical attention, and TLC during our rescues wait for the "RIGHT" forever home.
All of our dogs are in foster homes throughout the valley - we do not have a shelter that you can visit. Once you submit an application, your references are checked and the home visit is complete, we will contact you to set up a satisfactory meeting place for a get-together with your potential adoptive pet.
Our dogs are cared for in foster homes during this wait. We try to have them in a foster home environment for at least 2 weeks. They are temperament tested to the best of our ability to ensure a perfect match into their new home. Our number one concern is for the safety of the adoptive family and the happiness of the pet. We strive for a FOREVER placement - not all dogs are perfect for all families. We don't want to place "A" dog in your home - we want to place "THE" dog for your family!
We can't save every dog but we can make a difference...one dog at a time!
We are desperately seeking foster homes for our wonderful dogs! We also accept used crates or donations of any kind!

Our Adoption Process...
We prefer e-mail to cut down on cell phone minute usage! Once an application is submitted, it is reviewed, references are checked, and a home visit is done. If approved, we will contact you about the dog you are interested in. We want to place these dogs with the "RIGHT" families so it may take a bit to find that dog for you, please be patient.
