BUTTONS's story...
Buttons is our latest medical needs dogs. Buttons is about as cute as they come, hence his name. This love bug of a darling pup is a 4 to 5 months old border collie puppy who was bailed 10/10/09 by BCIN's founder. Buttons has a break in his right rear leg, and until we take him to Dr. Connelly, at High Desert Veterinary in Victorville on 10/12/09, we will not know if he requires surgery. Most likely, Buttons was hit by a car and he was taken to the shelter as a stray by some good Samaritans. Shelter personnel and volunteers took an instant liking to Buttons because of his very sweet nature and his extreme overbite which is a congenital defect. BCIN was contacted on Buttons behalf and after meeting him, we refused to turn our back on him, and welcomed him in our rescue program with open arms. Without BCIN's help, Buttons faced euthanization and he had no chance of making it out of the shelter. Buttons is a very special pup worth saving. BCIN is committed to obtain the necessary veterinary care that Buttons requires. We are sending this plea out to you for donations to help offset the cost of Buttons' veterinary care and to support the rescue work we have dedicated our lives to make a difference to end BC homelessness and suffering.
BCIN is a federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit charity, and as such, all donations are tax deductible. BCIN is comprised of an unpaid volunteer staff, therefore, all donations are 100% spent for the benefit of the border collies in our rescue program. If you would like to help Buttons, no matter how small the amount, please send your donation to:

Keep checking our website for updates on Buttons' progress. Mahatma Gandhi once said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated"...BCIN couldn't agree more.

BUTTONS UPDATE:

Buttons sure is a lucky puppy. He was taken to our vet on 10/12/09 and it appears from his X-Rays that he has a Greenstick Fracture. This means he does not require surgery. A Greenstick Fracture is so called because the bone is bent and cracked, splitting like a green stick. It usually occurs only in young bones. Greenstick fractures are small cracks within the bone which leave the bone basically intact, but cracked. In other words, the bone is not completely broken.

During examination, Dr. Connelly explained to me that the injury was at least 4 weeks old and it had already started to heal. For the next 3-4 weeks, Buttons' activity will need to be curtailed, so the greenstick fracture can heal. His prognosis for a full recovery without complications is excellent.

Keeping Buttons quiet has been fairly easy. He is happiest when he is next to me while I work on the computer. He is the sweetest puppy, and for his age, remarkably mellow. However, he is a puppy afterall, and would like nothing more that to play with my pack.

Once Buttons fully recovers, he will be available for adoption. His adopters must be committed to work with the destruction and energy associated with raising a puppy, along with housebreaking accidents. As with all puppies, socialization and puppy obedience classes are a must. This will ensure that you have an outgoing, socialized, well behaved, and and well adjusted adult dog in your family.

About Our Rescue Group...
Border Collies in Need, Inc. was founded in 2007 by a group of non-paid volunteers who have come together to rescue and foster Border Collies (BCs). Border Collies in Need is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing Border Collies who are abandoned, neglected, or abused, and placing them into permanent, loving homes. Our dogs come to us from a variety of different sources such as City and County Shelters and strays. We also accept dogs from private individuals, or offer assistance to those needing help to re-home their family pets, who for whatever reason must relinquish their Border Collie(s).

Our ultimate purpose is to match homeless or potentially homeless Border Collies with loving permanent families, specifically interested in the breed. We will accomplish this by providing temporary foster care, necessary and reasonable veterinary treatment, temperament evaluations of the dogs, and interviewing suitability of potential adopters, which includes a “home-check.” Each dog is provided with all necessary and reasonable veterinary treatment, vaccinations, sterilization, and micro-chipping.

Border Collies in Need recognizes the need to expand its horizons beyond the basic rescue duties, and network closely with regional Border Collie clubs which includes herding, agility, and flyball activities for sport and competition. Border Collies In Need recognizes that many regional Border Collie clubs do not have funds to support rescue even though they are the ones who are looked upon as the caretakers of the breed.

It is through the mutual admiration and respect of this breed that will encourage awareness to their plight by breed education, by promoting rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption.

Our Adoption Process...
The dogs in our program are fully tested and evaluated for temperament, sterilized, micro chipped, and all required vaccinations have been administered prior to adoption.

In order to adopt a dog from BCs in Need, Inc., you must first submit an Adoption Application. You will be contacted by one of our volunteers to discuss your application and the BC traits you desire for your companion. Once your application has been approved, you will be eligible to adopt.

To submit your application, you may apply online. The more information that you can give us on your application helps us to determine if the dog is the right match for you. Additionally, we may recommend others for your consideration that would fit into your lifestyle. We strive to mutually match our dogs into forever homes with adopters. You will be notified by email or telephone when your application has been approved.

We schedule adoptions by appointment only or you can visit us at local adoption events which are listed on our Events Page. If you have another dog, you will need to bring it with you to see if they are compatible with one another. We will do a home check, however, pictures of your home, yard, fencing, gates, and where the dog will sleep are encouraged.

If you have any questions please email us at rescue@bordercolliesinneed.org.
