Happy's story...

Some of you may remember Happy and his sad story. Happy lived in Gastonia North Carolina. On a hot day in July his owner called Animal Control saying his dog was suffering from heat stroke. AC told him to bring the dog to the vet immediately. They were concerned to the point where they took a special trip to the mans house. What they found was soaking wet Pit Bull tied to a tree in the hot sun. Instead of taking the dog to the vet the owner poured freezing cold water on him sending 'Happy' into shock.

Animal Control confiscated Happy and brought him to Gaston County shelter where he faced being gassed the next day. Many emails were sent out about Happy who needed rescue.

When it became clear there were no takers on Happy we took him. We needed to pull another dog like we needed a hole in the head but something about him tugged at us.

On the day of transport Happy RAN off transport wagging his tail and friendly as could be. I had to place him in the back yard while I was trying to get the other 14 dogs settled. I noticed my elderly blind pug went and laid down in front of the door which she never does. On the other side of that door Happy was doing the same thing. I cautiously introduced them and Happy licked her nose. He stole my heart.

As I sat at my kitchen table I went through his paperwork and noticed his name was 'Johnson' so I went over and called his name. He did not even look at me. This tells me no one ever spent time with this dog or ever made him a family member. He was just a 'possession' to leave tied up in front of house without a second thought to his health or well being. I seen where his owner signed the euthanasia papers on him.

I am glad we pulled Happy. He has been with his foster mom since the day he left my house on the day of transport. She loves and cares for him the way he deserves.

Attached are some photos of Happy which should depict the type of life he leads now. A far cry from the lonely Pit Bull tied up in the hot sun.

Thank you to anyone who donated, encouraged us to pull him, or kept him in your prayers. Most of all thank you to his foster mom and dad who will forever be in our hearts.

You will see in these photos making a change in one life can really make a huge difference. I think Happy would agree wholeheartedly.

Feel free to pass along....it's a nice success story for a breed who rarely has that 'Happy' ending. .....

Happy is available for adoption and foster mom would love to meet prospective applicants. Help Save One, Inc does not have mandatory adoption fees although we appreciate any donations to help reimburse us for the vetting and transport of your dog. About Our Rescue Group...
Help Save One is a registered, non profit organization that functions as an advocate for dogs who are in danger of being gassed. We believe gassing is a barbaric way to euthanize an innocent animal. You will see it mentioned several times on this website but I want it in big capitals right here as well:

IF GASSING IS INHUMANE FOR CHILD MURDERERS AND SERIAL RAPISTS THEN WHY IS IT ACCEPTABLE FOR OUR INNOCENT ANIMALS?

The answer is very simple – It is not acceptable and never will be. Help Save One is a non political, humane, and caring organization with volunteers who work regular jobs and then spend countless hours every week into the wee hours of morning promoting these dogs.

We work on pulling the dogs of North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. We are not opposed to pulling from other shelters but please note though that we can not always accommodate every request. I can make you a promise that we will always try to help. Our main focus are dogs in high kill, gassing shelters. They languish in rural shelters with very little help. There are volunteers at these shelters that work tirelessly but they are overwhelmed and outnumbered by the sheer numbers.

Why should these dogs be overlooked? Why do they need to wait to die while we work to get laws changed? We work very hard to change the way things are at a state and local level but is the answer to let beautiful dogs die a horrible death while us humans work on the specifics?

Of course everything we do is just a band aid on a much larger issue - we need to educate and demand that each state have spay/neuter laws. Each person who adopts needs to start looking at their dog as their companion, child, and YOU are their protector. A dog is not to be dumped when you get pregnant, move, or get tired of them. These loyal creatures would give their life for you - we need to do right by them.

Of course we all feel bad for these dogs but pet ownership is a huge responsibility. These dogs deserve the best and a forever home is the goal. I have no doubt people will step up for these dogs in need. I am always amazed at the people who go through great lengths to save these dogs.
