| Ferne (with a second E!) may have the body type of a prairie dog. But her heart is pure lion. Ferne was a foundling kitten who her hurt a foreleg falling off a high playpen at the vet’s. Infection set in, and it was touch and go for awhile. But Ferne battled back gamely, took her medicine faithfully, and has regained the use of her (fashionably splayed) front paw. During convalescence, she learned to walk using her back legs only. For the heck of it, Ferne still likes to sit up resting on her back paws, like a middle-aged man reading the newspaper or a baseball catcher waiting on a fastball. She is also very playful as her photo suggests. “Special Needs” cat? More like “Special Knees.” Ferne is a chatterbox who loves to be held on human laps or to roughhouse with oversized feline companions at her foster home. Ferne’s foster family would keep her if they didn’t have, well, several other full time boarders. We just know she’s going to make someone very happy. She’s docile, loves kids, and Turner Classic Movies (not colorized). Ferne has tested negative for feline leukemia and HIV and is up to date on her shots. She does, however, need a very small thrice-weekly dose of pain medicine now. The vet says she may need pain medication occasionally throughout her life because of damage to the front leg bones from her injury and infection. |
