Out of Harms' Way 'April' Now Needs a Home I rescued 'April' last month. She was in 'danger' and in immediate need of veterinary care. At six months old she had lived in a dirt yard without care or attention. I won't go into the other details. You can assume the worst. You've read too many emails like this. First thing she had a bath – and oh, what a pretty girl! The good news is she is a bright, happy and smart girl. Her temperament and disposition are excellent. I took her to the vet and got all her shots, de-wormed her, did tests, had her ears cleaned and treated, and took care of a minor skin condition. She's now in perfect health. All she needs is spayed. As you can imagine the last vet bill destroyed my budget in this economy. (She is also not micro-chipped yet.) She is 90% house broken. She's learning to walk with a Halti really well. She knows 'sit', and is learning other words with amazing speed and ease. April is also pretty well crate trained now. April is a mix. I was told blue nose / red nose pit by the person I got her from – but she has a long tail and legs, and her face is more pointed. People who meet here don't think she is a pit at all. She is gentle, loves to press into you, kisses and cuddles like nobody's business with fur that is soft as mink. Her eyes – stunning! They change colors with the light. I've rescued many pits and mixes… She just doesn’t look pit. She would be good with kids (she still jumps a bit, although gently, but is almost broken of that). She's done great with toys. She's a mouthy puppy and hasn't destroyed anything due to a watchful eye and positive substitution training. Her bite is also very gentle. She has her adult teeth and has never broken skin during her transition to toys. April weighs 50 pounds. She is very lean and long in the body and full-sized for her paws. She still has all that great extra puppy-skin, big floppy ears and wrinkled-up face. She looks like she will end up at about 60 pounds as a full adult. I've had her on a combo of Pinnacle all natural wet and dry food. She gets along great with my dog. She is not aggressive and loves to play. She loves fetch with a tennis ball. April is ready for more socialization – and she should do really great. My only experience with her and cats is that she wants to chase them. She might get along fine after being with them, or not – I have no idea. I would love to keep her in my life, but my older dog is not adjusting well. It's not fair to him or to her. He deserves to be the center of attention, and she deserves all the attention due to a perfect puppy. I can't continue to watch both of them all of the time and don't want to risk an injury to either of them. April is looking for a good foster situation or a forever home. I'm reaching out to the rescue community for help. April sends kisses and appreciation. She deserves to have a great puppy-hood and long life in the arms of love. Please email or call me, 818-506-5794. Thanks. Mark.

We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs from various Los Angeles shelters the day they are to be euthanized. Our goal is to help provide animals with a second chance to a happy life and to help reduce pet overpopulation through spay and neuter programs. Once rescued, we place our dogs into loving foster homes while they await adoption. We do not keep dogs in kennels. Placing the dogs in foster homes is the first step to rehabilitation, as it allows us to thoroughly evaluate a dog's demeanor and needs enabling us to make the perfect match of dog and permanent owner. We attribute our high rate of successful placement to our foster program. At Ace of Hearts, we do not discriminate against any breed, including those in the bully breed family. Additionally, Ace of Hearts is dedicated to educating the public on how to be responsible pet owners and on the importance of spaying and neutering. We believe the real solution to pet overpopulation is through spaying and neutering pets.
