Lil Hans's story...
07-30-05 Lil Hans is a 10 yr. old retired breed dog. He has finally decided to hang it up and find a relaxing way to spend his retirement. He is very friendly, walks quite nicely on the leash as long as you allow him to lead the way. He loves an adventure.
If you look closely at his pic., you will see his tongue hanging out. He is almost toothless, no dentures in his future, thus the tongue just hangs out.
We took Lil Hans in as another tribute to Otto. He surely deserves to spend his final days as Otto did, enjoying every day to the fullest. We still miss Otto!
We are going to need a very special family for this lil guy. Someone who can see beyond the years and see a happy little fella that only wants to love and be loved. He won't take up much room, yet he will fill your heart and home with his antics.

Update 08-02-05 Lil Hans saw Doc Johnson for "The Works!" He is H/W, Lyme, Ehrlichia neg., vaccinated including Rabies, has a good heartbeat, and Doc shined and polished his one remaining tooth. He stole Heather's heart with his 8 lbs. of spunk and good looks.
Note: 08-11-05 Lil Hans has been stealing our hearts. He will come up to you, put his paws on your leg, begging to be lifted up, then curl up in your lap for a snooze. He also loves to curl up beside you if you are taking a nap, put his little head on your arm and stretch out beside you. He does NOT snore! Yeah! What is not to love about this lil fat German dog? He has gained a bit of weight now that he no longer spends his energies chasing the ladies.
A scan has revealed that Lil Hans already has a Home Again microchip.
Note 08-13-05 We just could not resist snapping this pic of Lil Hans taking a nap on Sadie's golden tail. He must have had quite a dream of those days gone by. Golden dreams?
Lil Hans may have been "debarked" as he does not have a typical dog bark. We will ask Doc to check him over and see if he can tell if debark surgery was done or some other reason for his quiet bark. Some breeders debark their dogs. Yep, it happens!

Note 08-16-05 Lil Hans spent the afternoon visiting the Good Samaritan Care Center in Cole Camp. Many of the residents were gathered in the TV room. Several begged to hold the cute little German dog. They took turns holding him, petting him, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. He loved being held and all of the attention did not swell his head at all. They all had questions about his little floppy tongue. Explaining that he only had one tooth, thus nothing to hold the tongue in, some even asked about false teeth for him. hehe

Update 08-19-05 We must report that Lil Hans suffered an accident today. He is currently being treated by Doc Anstaett for a broken jaw. He has been sedated, surgery will be performed, he will be kept in the clinic until Monday.
We ask for prayers for Doc and his skill at surgery and Lil Hans for his recovery.
We will post updates as they become available.

Update 08-20-05 We visited Lil Hans about 10AM today at Doc Anstaett's ofc. He has a break on each side. One side required a permanent wire. The other side required a plate with 3 screws that will be removed in 6 - 8 weeks.
Doc advised us that Lil Hans has very soft bones, combined with his age, will make for a slow recovery.
Doc brought a small bowl of soup consistency food to Lil Hans while we visited. He lapped it right up. His appetite is good. Thus, we are very anxious to get him back in our care on Monday.
Tipi Girl made a surprise visit with her guardian, Mary. We then made a second trip to Doc's ofc., just before he closed at noon. Mary and Tipi Girl wanted to meet Lil Hans. Lil Hans was a trooper! He got up to sniff at Tipi Girl. Mary was also able to hold him and see what a brave little man he is.

Update 08-21-05 Doc Anstaett advised us that Lil Hans is doing fine, lapped up his breakfast and supper. We phoned and found Doc at the clinic on Sunday, caring for him and other week-end surgery cases. Doc wants Lil Hans to remain on a soup consistency food for some time so he does not put any pressure on the jaws. We will also pick up a calcium supplement that may be crushed finely and put into the soup. Not sure how much good it will do at his age, yet we are more than willing to do whatever is necessary to give him qualify of life for whatever time he has remaining. We LOVE this dog! As we LOVE all the others that come into our rescue! These are fur-kids from our Lord! He has entrusted us to do the very best for them and He will help us.

Update 08-22-05 Welcome Home, Lil Hans!
Lil Hans left the care of Doc Anstaett this AM, curled up with his head against his guardian for the trip back to the rescue.
Lil Hans is on an antibiotic twice a day and his food must be soup consistency from now on. He is also taking Pet Cal, a calcium supplement crushed finely in his soup for the next 60 days, possibly longer. He will also receive a baby aspirin crushed finely twice a day for the pain.
He is a bundle of joy. We did not expect him to be this lively after such a major surgery. He shows such great courage. John Wayne would be proud of his True Grit!!

Note 08-24-05 Just a brief note -- Lil Hans is doing absolutely wonderfully. What amazing resilence! He laps up his soup meal with Rxs, naps, plays with the other dogs, especially the newly arrived dachshunds. He sleeps curled up under the covers quietly all night long with his rescue guardian. What a fur-child!!

Note 08-26-05 Lil Hans rode along as Sir Alex went to Doc Johnson for a complete check-up. (Doc Johnson was out of town on an emergency when Lil Hans had has accident, thus we rushed him to Doc Anstaett. ) Lil Hans is a favorite of Heather's, Doc Johnson's assistant, thus Hans wanted to show her his new "look." He stole Heather's heart again with his unusual look due to the plate and wire in his jaws.

Note 09-24-05 We took Lil Hans, Lolita Hunnie, Cisco & Poncho to play with Tipi Girl and Sir Alex at a whole hog roast in the country.
Unfortunately, Lil Hans just did not warm up to those in attendance. Since his accident he has been rather fearful of new people and places. We are a bit saddened by this as he had been such an outgoing little guy upon his arrival in our rescue.
We shall be consulting Trina, our behavior modification specialist, for tips when she resumes her obedience training.

Lil Hans has been on a special diet these past few days. We were sent some supplements by Tami, a dachshund lover, to help his possible arthritis. It must be working as he is not limping now! Currently, Lil Hans has his own blended meals 4 times a day to soup consistency. He has Science Diet prescribed by Dr. Anstaett, along with Doctors Foster & Smith, Lamb & brown rice formula, Chicken & brown rice formula, & Fish & potatoe formula also sent by Tami. His breakfast also includes a 3V Cap skin formula, Pet-Cal crushed finely prior to adding to the blend, Doctors Foster & Smith Joint Care and Vita-Min Tabs powder. We thank Tami so much for these items that may help Lil Hans achieve optimum health.

Update 09-30-05 Lil Hans went along with Lolita Hunnie to get her spay scar checked out by Doc Johnson. He just had to say "Woof" to Heather again. He did not show any weight gain, yet he is getting around much better and not limping. (His weight was 7 3/4 lbs., obviously he has lost some since the accident.)
We are going to make his soup thicker in hopes that will help put some weight on him. He is staying hydrated and we are very thankful for that.

Note 10-12-05 Lil Hans weighs 8.4 lbs, so has gained a bit over the past few days. Doc Anstaett examined him. The jaw appears to be healing. We have scheduled Lil Hans to have the metal plate removed on Oct. 24. He will need to be sedated.

Note: 10-15-05 Mary visited us today helping get updated pics on several of the dogs. We just had to show off Lil Hans in his little jacket that says "Frankly Rover, I don't give a woof!" He has another that says "It's a dog's life." We adore this little dog. He will be a wonderful companion for the right person and we intend to continue patiently waiting until the Master sends that special guardian along.

Note 10-20-05 Weight 8 lbs., thus have added Science Diet Puppy Chow to supplement his regular meals.

Update 10-24-05 Weight 8.2 lbs. Doc Anstaett removed the metal plate from Lil Hans' jaw. He was very pleased to tell us that the bones have healed. He also recommends the blended soup diet to continue as the bones are very soft and crunching dry dog food may cause them to shatter.
Lil Hans has learned that the sound of the blender means his soup is being prepared. We occasionally find him standing him front of the counter where the blender is stored, as if to say "Feed me!" We will continue with the calcium supplements and other supplements to help strengthen his bones.

Note 11-11-05 We would welcome a foster home for Lil Hans. You must be willing to prepare his mini meals 3 or 4 times a day in a blender. He is not any problem at all about the house, very content to lie beside the other dogs on the big pillow.
He is still fearful of new folks since the accident. Yet, he has taken walks on the leash with Payton and Miranda, two of our young volunteers, after school. They even took him to the Good Samaritan Care Center to visit with the residents. He needs more social time to overcome his fear and the girls are a huge help.

Note 11-14-05 Lil Hans rode along as we took Candy for an x-ray of her spine. He weighs 8.3 lbs.

Note 11-19-05 Lil Hans spent Christbaumfest at Maxwell's Woodcarving shop, Buzzard Roost, in Cole Camp. Unfortunately, he is still rather timid with visitors since his accident.
Lil Hans is doing quite nicely on the leash, yet he is so small it is just tempting to carry him. We must let him walk more to improve his confidence and for the exercise.

Note 11-22-05 Lil Hans rode along as we took Maggie for her check-up. He weighs 8 lbs., evidently burnt a few calories with the exercise. Dr. Candy, now practicing with Dr. Anstaett, suggested we add Science Diet A&D, higher fat content, to his diet. Thus, we are doing that, plus mini meals.
Of course, Lil Hans had to say "Woof" to Doc Anstaett in appreciation for saving his life.

Note 11-25-05 We are now adding VitaCal to supplement Lil Hans' diet. It is a Drs. Foster & Smith high calorie supplement sent by Tami. We are grateful for her help.
With all the blending and mixing, it almost feels as if this little fella has his personal chef prepare his meals.
Do you like to cook, blend, fuss over someone? Then Lil Hans may be the perfect pet for you. He is so good about the house, just needs mini meals throughout the day.
Lil Hans does have one special request of a foster home or adopter. He must be able to share your pillow and bed as he prefers to sleep under the covers, head on your pillow, or curled up with his little head under your chin.
His house manners are fine IF taken out on a regular schedule. He goes to the door, out the door, down the porch, into the fenced play area, does his duty, then come back to the door. He does need supervision. As a mill dog, he learned to "clean up" after himself. Old habits die hard. You must be willing to let him know that cleaning up is now YOUR job and not his.

Update 12-06-05 Lil Hans rode along as we took Chip for vet work. He is still weighing 8 lbs even with the mini meals and supplements.
Lil Hans is always ready to flash that one pearly white at Heather in Doc Johnson's ofc. He steals the heart of everyone he meets. Still a bit apprehensive of new folks, yet so handsome and irresistible.

Note 12-07-05 Lil Hans attended the Brauersville Lutheran Church Ladies Aid quilting bee east of Cole Camp today. It was a good day of exposure to new people. After a few minutes he was running about, sniffing, yet not quite trusting the outstretched hands.
He did find one of the quilts rather interesting, hopped upon it as if to be helpful. Fortunately, he did not stick a pin in his little paw.
Lil Hans helped deliver a loaf of dill bread, fresh from the oven of the Maple St. Cafe & Bake Shop. He took along his bowl of dog soup while the ladies had their potluck lunch.

Note 12-14-05 Lil Hans rode along as Winston went to see the vet. He weighs 8.3 lbs. We are beginning to think that no matter how much he eats, his weight will remain in the 8 lb. range.

Note 12-30-05 Lil Hans thought he was a 180 lb. rottweiler last night. All 8 lbs of him! Rushed him to Doc Anstaett this AM, almost sure he had broken his jaw again.
Just before heading out, hastily put out a prayer request for the lil dog-man. The power of prayer works!

Doc told us to just give the jaw time to heal on its own. The bones are calcified, soft, and he should continue lapping up his soup. Surgery was not going to be needed.

Lil Hans then got to have a very late breakfast soup, lapped it up, then hopped on the Kuranda bed, went to sleep beside Tippy.
Thanks to all those that sent prayers forth. Bless you one and all.

Update 01-12-06 Lil Hans has been doing splendidly. He still does not want a sweater pulled over his head. His jaw is a bit sensitive, yet he does just fine at mealtimes.
Thus, he is wearing the jackets recently received from Kathy. Thanks Kathy!

He was quite the dog-man about town. He was sporting his new plaid jacket. His first stop was at Rosebud's Gifts & Fabrics where they are having a huge sale on fine fabrics. He found some soft fleece fabric with little teddy bears. Gorgeous! They also have dress fabric and many of the ladies shop at Rosebud's for their fine fabrics. They also have a very nice selection of items for cat and dog lovers. You may even find some John Deere items, roosters and horses.

Lil Hans next went by the Good Samaritan Care Center, again to show off his little plaid jacket. The residents always love to see Lil Hans, his one tooth shining, little tongue hanging out. He always brings a smile to so many faces of those residents that are unable to get out.

Update 01-16-06 Lil Hans made another visit to the Brauersville Lutheran Ladies Aid quilting bee today. He just had to show off his plaid jacket to the ladies that were quilting. The ladies remembered him from his previous visit, let him sniff their shoes to refresh his memory. He is such a hit with everyone.

Update 02-01-06 Lil Hans was quite busy about town today. His first stop was by W-K Chevrolet as repair work on his ride was needed.
He then strolled up to Country Surplus which has assorted housewares, office supplies, hardware, tools and much more. He always likes to show off his one tooth to Rick & Cheryl.
His last stop was by Borman Oil Co. to gas up his ride. He was sporting his plaid jacket, quite the stylish little dog-man.

About Our Rescue Group...
We are a small, foster home based rescue, licensed by the Mo. Dept of Agriculture in June 2004. We specialize in senior dogs.

We also offer Hospice care for dying dogs as space permits.

This site is dedicated to Max, rescued by Carolyn, and Lady, rescued by Connie. Both were senior dogs that were in kill shelters and were "Naturals" when visiting the care center. Because of them, this rescue was born.

We handle no more than two large senior dogs at a time. All of the dogs are completely vetted including but not limited to altered, vaccinated, dental & microchipped before being placed for adoption.

Most, yet not all, visit care centers to become familiar with medical equipment. The goal is to get the senior pets into senior homes or non-senior homes with a low energy lifestyle.

Our goal for 2007 is to have a few small dogs, under 25 lbs., 1 to 6 years of age, in our foster homes. These small dogs will be closely observed for 2 weeks before being adopted out. This will allow us, hopefully, to notice and care for any medical problems or behavior problems that may arise. Their adoptions will help provide funds for the special needs of the large senior dogs that wait longer to find that special fur-ever home.

We are working on the Mighty Mutt Youth Program. This program will focus on small, young mixed breed dogs that are good with children. After all, how will children get experience with dogs unless they have a first pet? We need to educate the young people of today to make the future better for the dogs of tomorrow.

Mixed-breed dogs make excellent pets and lifelong friends. As a general rule, they enjoy better health and temperament than purebred animals. Unfortunately, a great number of these wonderful pets await their KILL DATE in shelters around the country. They are often not adopted because they are not a purebred dog. Thus, many are DESTROYED! The goal of the Mighty Mutt Youth Program is to change that by:

1. Locating kill shelter dogs that interact well with other animals and children

2. Rescuing these young dogs before they are killed and get them to the veterinarian

3. Uniting the right family with the right Mighty Mutt

4. Educating the young person and his/her family with guidelines for responsible pet ownership and proper preventative care for pets

We operate solely on donations. We can always use towels, sheets, baby blankets, shampoo and grooming supplies. For those of you that love to garage sale and shop in thrift stores, we could use gently used collars, leashes, bowls, any pet supplies. You may mail them to the address shown below. Your donations will be used to save the lives of pets and provide veterinary care.

In 2009 we became a 501 (c) 3. Your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We send a monthly newsletter and will be glad to add you to our list. We will also send a year end financial statement upon request. We do not pay for advertising or salaries. We have wonderful volunteers providing foster care, assisting with care center visits with the pets, computer work and fund raisers. The young children who volunteer today to help with the pets will grow up to be animal lovers and advocates. We have an obedience instructor willing to work with you so that you may keep your dog. Word of mouth in a small town spreads like wildfire. Folks love old dogs. We truly adore ALL the volunteers!

Come Meet Our Pets...
We are in a rural area five miles from historic downtown Cole Camp. Some of the pets may be in foster homes. We do not have a kennel as all of these pets live in a home environment. We are open 7 days a week by appointment.

Cole Camp is located in Benton County. Cole Camp is southeast of Kansas City about 2 hours, northeast of Springfield about 2 hours and southwest of Columbia about 2 hours. Cole Camp is located on 52 Highway, a short drive from Truman Lake and the Truman Dam. Please check out Cole Camp at www.colecampmo.com There are many places to visit while in the area looking for a pet, and some of the businesses are downright pet friendly. The Harris Guest House is a B&B which encourages well behaved pets to spend the night.
Our Adoption Process...
Our goal is to find the right placement for each pet. We never want them to be hungry or unwanted again. We will answer every question to the very best of our knowledge and always be honest when it comes to the animal's suitability for a home. We want to make sure that you get the pet that will suit your special needs and that you will be able to meet the special needs of your pet.

Senior citizens and disabled receive a discount.
We also offer a discount to those in uniform keeping us safe.

Land of the free because of the brave.
May our Lord wrap His Bubble of Protection about those that serve

May He comfort those left behind waiting, worrying & grieving.

The adoption fee ranges from $150 to $300.

The fee is based upon veterinary care, age & size of dog.
In addition as noted above we do make special arrangements for Senior citizens, the disabled and our military families.

The higher adoption fee on the younger small dogs helps care for the older dogs that take longer to find fur-ever homes.

Our adoption process begins with the e-mail or phone call to us. We will be asking for your complete name, address, telephone number, your veterinarian contact information and at least two personal references. We will then call you to ask a series of questions.

We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties...
We serve Cole Camp, Benton County, Missouri and surrounding areas. We do adopt out of state as long as the adopter comes to our location or to the foster home.
