Our Mission
The purposes and goals of the Franklin County Animal Shelter are:
* to provide protection and aid to animals that are temporarily in our care.
* to adopt homeless animals into humane environments.
* to educate the public about the proper and humane care and treatment of all animals.
* to implement programs and provide services to promote responsible pet ownership.
History
In 1974, the Nordica Woods Kennel Club was originated with a committee of about 16 people. After the club disbanded, the group continued to work on the dream of helping stray and abandoned animals in the Franklin County area. In 1976, the Franklin County Animal Shelter was incorporated and a shelter board was established.
Our current facility was built in 1979. We are now contracted by 26 communities in the Franklin County area to provide care and shelter to stray and abandoned animals.
We are located in Farmington, Maine. Our business hours are Monday through Saturday between 11:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

The Adoption Process
Here at F.C.A.S., we mostly house cats and dogs, who come to us as strays or owner surrenders. After we retain our strays for a few days, in hopes that their owners will claim them, they become available for adoption by the public. In order to adopt from our shelter, potential families for our pets must first fill out a pre-adoption survey. This must usually be done in person, but we will sometimes allow out-of-state customers to apply over the phone. After a 24-hour waiting period, during which we verify the applicant's information and ready the animal for its new home, he or she can be picked up during our regular business hours.
