Additional adoption info

All of our adoptions are first come first serve. You can visit our HSH or apply.

Apply at https://www.rgvhs.org/adopt

If you are interested in adopting a pet that is currently on a stray hold, we recommend that you submit an adoption application through our website. Please note that submitting an application does not place a hold on the pet you are applying for. Submitting an application puts you in line to adopt the pet. You must be present at the Humane Society at the time the stray hold is up in order to adopt. If you are not present, the adoption will go to the next person who submitted the application.

For pets that are in foster homes, please submit an application and wait for a member of our team to reach out to you about setting up an appointment for a meet and greet. This will allow for the foster parent to bring the pet to the shelter for you to meet.

At the moment, HSH does not have any set adoption fees on Cats, Kittens, Dogs, or Puppies. Adoption fees on these pets are "donation based" meaning you get to choose how much to donate toward the cost of their care. A $50 or $100 refundable spay/neuter deposit may apply.

All adopted pets go home up-to-date on age appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, on preventatives for fleas, ticks, and heartworms (if age appropriate), heartworm tested (if appropriate), microchipped, and either already spayed/neutered, or with an appointment to spay/neuter at no cost to you.

All pets are vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered (or scheduled for spay/neuter) prior to adoption.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
