We are located on Long Island in Port Washington, New York near Great Neck, but we work on rescue and adoption initiatives around the world. North Shore Animal League America is the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. Since 1944, we have been saving the lives of defenseless dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens — over 1,000,000 to date. Our vision is for a future in which all companion animals find responsible, loving homes where they are free from abuse, hunger, fear, and loneliness and receive the care and respect they deserve.
Our Adoption Center, is open every Thursday-Sunday 12pm-8pm. On average, our shelter is home to 350 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. Behind the scenes, the Adoption Center contains a nursery area, medical examination room and a grooming area where new admissions are health checked, vaccinated, bathed and groomed.
Visitors are reminded that adoption is a lifelong commitment. After selecting a pet, each potential adopter is thoroughly screened, ensuring each adopter recognizes the life-changing commitment a new pet can be. To date, over 1,000,000 pet owners have met our high standards and adopted a pet from North Shore Animal League America.
