High Plateau Humane Society's Adoption Process

1. Submit Application

Let us know who you are interested in, or, if you don't have just one animal in mind, what you are looking for in general terms.

2. Interview

Our Adoption Coordinator will contact you to ask any additional questions and to hear what an average day would be like for the pet.

3. Meet the Pet

If the pet seems like a good match for your interests and home situation, we will arrange for you to meet the pet.

4. Home Check

HPHS conducts a home check so they can give you tips on care tailored to your home environment to ensure the pet gets off to a good start

The High Plateau Humane Society is primarily concerned with finding the most appropriate home for our cats and dogs. Please understand that when we ask questions we are not trying to be nosey, we are simply trying to get to know you so we can be sure the animal you are interested in is really the right animal for you, and that you have the tools and resources needed to care for him or her. So, during our interview process we may ask you for references, or conduct a home check to be sure your home environment is appropriate for the animal. We appreciate your patience with us, and your willingness to share information. Thank you for considering one of our foster animals.

About High Plateau Humane Society

The High Plateau Humane Society (HPHS) is an all-volunteer organization that was founded in 1987. We rescue hundreds of dogs and cats each year in Modoc County, California, and (like most rescues) we do not receive any funding from the Humane Society of the United States. Our funding primarily comes from our adoption fees (which pay for about 70% of the medical costs for our average cat or dog), proceeds from our thrift store, and from donations from people like YOU! We are the only organization in Modoc County dedicated to rescuing all adoptable dogs that come through our area shelters. If we don't take them, they are euthanized, and we can't take them if we don't have the funds or foster homes to support them. So, your donations, as well as adoptions, really do save lives! Thank you for your support.

Come Meet High Plateau Humane Society's Pets

CATS: Come visit our Second Hand Thrift Store to see our adoptable cats Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. Call ahead to be sure we are open, as we occasionally need to close due to staffing issues.

DOGS: Call our Dog Program Coordinator, Jenn Andersen at 530-708-2377 if you are interested in meeting one of the adoptable dogs. They are all fostered & so special arrangements must be made to see them.
