South Heartland Rescue

It's hard to say when South Heartland really began because for my entire life, my family and I have been rescuing, adopting, and fostering animals of all shapes, sizes, and breeds. When my husband and I got married in 2008, we had just added Bella, our American Eskimo Dog to our fur-family that already consisted of two horses. Then, Thanksgiving of 2009 we rescued our first Siberian Husky from a kill shelter here in North Carolina. It didn't take us long to realize that we had fallen in love with Nordic dog breeds and decide that we wanted to help them. Here in North Carolina, there is a epidemic of homeless Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, and American Eskimo Dogs because of people wanting these beautiful dogs and getting them without actively researching them. As wonderful as these breeds are, they are not for everyone and have several personality quirks that need to be considered. After seeing how wide spread this problem is, we officially founded South Heartland.

Though we specialize in Nordic breed dogs and horses, any animal in need is welcome here at South Heartland. We also work with 'behaviorally challenged' animals to help them and their owners remain one big happy family.

Additional adoption info

Our Adoption Process starts with potential adopters researching the breeds they want to adopt. Then, they fill out an application and ready their vet references. Afterward, they meet the dog(s) they want to adopt and we introduce all family members, including pets. Then we have a home visit. Then comes the signing of the contract and the payment of any fees. From that moment on, they have a wonderful new family member!
