A Tail To Tell Puppy Mill Rescue's adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process is very strict. We require an excellent veterinary reference, several interviews and a home visit. We do not ship dogs via air. We require that all of our dogs be microchipped and we do require a signed contract.

1 Fill out an adoption Application

2 Review of your application
Someone from the A Tail To Tell Applications Committee will review your application to determine if it should be escalated to the next step. Since our goal is to find a safe and happy forever home for every dog, we appreciate your understanding should you be eliminated as an adoption candidate.

3 Veterinary Reference Check
A volunteer at A Tail To Tell will verify your veterinarian as listed on your application to ensure that your current pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered (we will not place one of our dogs in a home where there is another intact animal). If you do not have a pet, we will verify that the vet you have selected exists.

4 Phone or Email Interview
A volunteer will contact you directly to conduct a phone interview consisting of questions about you, your family, your home and other scenarios to determine a suitable match, if any, for your home. This typically occurs within a two to three week period of time but can happen sooner or later.

5 Home Visit
The final step of the approval process is a home visit. A home visit is when a volunteer comes to your home to determine if it is safe and acceptable for a small dog. Home visits will be set up by A Tail To Tell. A Tail To Tell will attempt to find a volunteer to conduct the home visit. This could take days or weeks. Please be patient with us. We are all volunteers.

6 Adopt
Once you have completed and passed the home visit, you are ready to adopt one of our dogs.

About A Tail To Tell Puppy Mill Rescue

A Tail To Tell, Inc is a group of men and women in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania dedicated to freeing dogs from the horrors of the puppy mills. We retrieve canine survivors from the Amish and Mennonite mills in our area and from other commercial breeders in the Northeast US. We provide veterinary care and loving foster homes while we work to find the best forever homes possible for our dogs

Safe Haven - Our dogs are kept in a network of volunteer foster homes. We acquire dogs directly from puppy mills, oftentimes racing the clock to arrive before they're killed. Dogs stay in our care as long as necessary until they have recovered enough mentally and physically to be adopted. We are lucky to have a professional groomer volunteer her time to groom our dogs.
Medical CareThe large majority of dogs we receive suffer from a number of medical conditions brought about by neglect. A puppy mill farmer's ultimate goal is to profit, so the expense of a veterinarian is not a reality, even if the animals are truly ill. Common things we see are extreme parasite loads, malnutrition, anorexia, prolapsed uteruses, eye infections and missing orbs, torn and deformed ears, bites, missing limbs, hernias, splayed feet, collars grown into and embedded in flesh, and hideous dental infections Obviously, this leads to very high veterinary bills for our group.
New Lives Only after most medical and some mental issues are rectified, do we attempt to place a dog in an adoptive home. Depending on the degree of mental and/or physical damage, this can take anywhere from a few days to years. Some dogs come to us well-socialized while others have never had human contact and are essentially feral. We are very selective when choosing adoptive families for our dogs due to enormous time, financial and emotional investments on the part of our volunteers and supporters. We make absolutely certain that these animals never see another day of mistreatment in their lives.

Support adoption and rescue. Why go to a dog breeder, cat breeder or pet store to buy a dog or buy a cat when you can adopt?

Why should you adopt?

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you'll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
