A Hillsboro, OH 45133 rescue helping to find loving homes for dogs.
1 - 6 of 6 Adoptable Pets at This Shelter
At this time we are holding our Adoption Days in Hillsboro, Ohio, Washington Court House, Ohio, and Wilmington, Ohio. We are actively looking for more sites that will allow us to visit with our dogs.
If you know of a business that can allow us inside during the winter and inside or outside during the summer please let us know and they will be listed as sponsors on our Adopt a Pet website.
We prefer to find families for our foster dogs within the Tri-State area so we have a chance to meet and talk with them and ensure the animal they want to adopt is a good fit for their family and home life. We like to be sure a large dog isn’t going to a family in an apartment.
We will make arrangements to transport the animals, meeting families part way if they live over 1 hour away from Hillsboro, Ohio
We began with two individuals who used to volunteer and foster at the Highland County Dog Pound run by the Sheriff's Department. This is a kill facility and it became increasingly difficult to find that dogs we had been working with - helping to socialize them and make them more readily adoptable - had been euthanized.
We also found that if we fostered the dogs they were still County property so we were not able to actively try to find them homes. Because of the limitations put upon us by the County's system we decided to go it on our own and set up a private rescue group personally financed.
We started by adopting from the Highland County Pound but ocassionally take in animals from other kill facilities as well as local abandoned, mistreated and/or stray dogs. In unusual circumstances we have accepted owner surrendered animals but because they are kept at our homes, space is extremely limited.
A 2nd chance is not affiliated with the Highland County dog pound, the Humane Society or any other formal organization.
We are operating out of our homes using our private funds. Our monies are supplemented by the adoption donations we receive and any donations obtained at our Adoption Day events. All of these funds are used to obtain additional animals as well as to feed, shelter and vet the ones we have.
Our adult dogs are spayed/neutered, wormed, treated for fleas and receive rabies, distemper, parvo and influenza vaccinations. Puppies will have been wormed, treated for fleas and begun their vaccination series.
In addition we feed, shelter and transport them on Adoption Day trips to TSC and PetLand in Hillsboro and Wilmington. All of this is at our personal expense.
Documentation with specifics on all vetting will be provided at the time the adoption fee is received and ownership transferred.
The majority of animals obtained from pounds or as strays come with little information on their history, breed, age or temperament. We ask the veterinarian to estimate age and breed when possible but there is NO guarantee as to accuracy. It is simply a guess based upon size, appearance and temperament of the animal.
When possible we will provide an adopting family with information on what we have observed during the time we fostered them regarding how they socialize, behave with other animals, walk on lead, behave with children, etc., but again cannot make any guarantees.
---"Love animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harass them, don't deprive them of their happiness, don't work against God's intent. Man, do not pride yourself on superiority to animals; they are without sin, and you, with your greatness, defile the earth by your appearance on it, and leave the traces of your foulness after you - alas, it is true of almost every one of us!" ~Fyodor Dostoyevsky
We are in this because we love dogs, cats and all animals and hope to do our part for homeless pets.
All of our dogs are at our homes in Hillsboro so private viewings are by pre-arrangement only.
On weekends we have Adoption Days at local business locations. Current sponsoring businesses are listed below.
