Prince George Equine Rescue

Our story, our critters
We get asked many times, “How did you end up running a horse rescue?”…..

Approximately nine years ago I found myself in need of a second used saddle. I heard of a tack/horse auction happening in Quesnel so I decided to go. I bought a great saddle and having never been to a horse auction, I decided to stick around and watch the horses come through. I was shocked at the condition some of the horses were in. Many were very thin to emaciated, their feet were painfully long, bellies bloated with worms. There were also some very nice, healthy looking horses going through as well. I noticed several horses going to some of the same bidders.

Being naïve to the whole auction experience, I commented to one of the people in the bleachers “Those guys must have a big ranch or something to need all those horses!” They quickly advised me that those bidders were the “meat buyers” and that most of those horses would be shipped to a feed lot and later sold for meat. I was absolutely appalled! As the auction continued, more and more of these wonderful horses filled the meat buyers holding pens. I grew more and more upset. Then one pretty little grey filly pranced through, tail and head almost defiantly high. There were no bidders but one. By this time I was more than upset, I was damn angry! I was determined they would not get her! Looking back I’m sure I would have mortgaged my home to prevent such an untimely demise for this beautiful filly. Luckily for me by the time the bidding was over I was only a few hundred dollars poorer than when I came. Little did I know that it was only the beginning. After only a few months I had “Shyanne” healthy and ready to start under saddle.

Meanwhile I couldn’t get the images of those terrified auction horses out of my mind. I found myself at another “meat sale” and came home with two, then three at the next auction, then as many as my trailer could fit. Soon word got out that there was this lady in Prince George that would take in unwanted horses. The horses started trickling in.

I quickly began to realize the lack of alternatives for unwanted horses in the North. I decided to start advertising and become an official rescue. It was as if I had opened the flood gates! PGER took on a life of its own. The response was incredible, the support from the community was wonderful. Close to 200 rescues later, we find ourselves expanded to a fabulous 160 acre property in Pineview and busier than ever.

Rescue FAQs

Although we mostly serve cental British Columbia, we have taken in horses from as far as Alberta and Victoria and placed horses in homes as far as the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Additional adoption info

Sometimes we receive an accurate history on a horse from the previous owner. We are then able to provide potential owners with all of that info, plus anything else we discover along the way. Many times we are not so fortunate and have minimal history to go on. In those cases, we work with the horse as if it has had no training. We start from the beginning and go from there! Each new horse is put through a variety of “temperament tests”. This enables us to assess each horse’s personality and training level. This also helps to eliminate any surprises for new owners.

SAFETY IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE!

Unfortunately many horses come to PGER in desperate need of basic care. They come to us from thin to completely emaciated. Their feet are far too long, coats filthy, full of lice etc. These horses are immediately placed on a healthy diet. They are started on a regular worming program. Vaccinations are administered. Each horse is assessed by our farrier Rene Theroux. They are then trimmed and/or shod accordingly. Any horses in need of veterinary care are seen by either Dr. Murdoch or Dr. Green and the wonderful staff at Murdoch Veterinary Clinic.

ADOPTION POLICIES:

Adoption fees for rescue horses are kept below current market value for a reason. This enables us to place these horses into approved homes quicker and cover the cost of each horse’s care. This also keeps spaces available as we don’t always know when we will have a horse coming in or how many. Unfortunately we have limited space and we are not funded.

Adopting a horse from PGER is not about getting a cheap horse! A lot of these horses come to us with some issue or another. They need time, patience and understanding. A potential owner must be prepared to work with the horse to overcome any behavior issues it may have and also be prepared to meet any additional physical needs.

These horses need loving, caring owners for the long term!

Although we are not always able to perform a property inspection prior to approving an adoption, you can expect to at least receive an informal interview by phone and/or in person. You may be required to provide a reference. Concluding that, you may set up an appointment to come to PGER to view, cuddle, and ride the horse(s) of your choice. You can set up as many appointments as you need to help make your decision. We will do our best to insure that you are making the most suitable match for yourself and for the horse.

When you adopt a horse from PGER you must agree that under no circumstances can the horse be sent to auction for any reason.

You will be required to sign a contract agreeing to such.
