My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Updated Bio 04/11/14: Scout is a 9 month old, 5.3 lb. little Yorkie boy. His weight has been steady at 5.3 for over two months, and is a very good weight for him.

Well, it's wonderful news for Scout! His bile acids results came in on Wednesday, and everything went down once more! The results from 02/06/2014: Scout fasted for 12 hours. Bile acids (pre) food: 13.4 should be no higher than 6.9 Bile acids (post) food: 58.2 should be no higher than 14.9
Here Are Scouts New Numbers. Results From 04/07/2014: Scout fasted for 12 hours. Bile Acids (pre) food: 2.2 YEA! Bile Acids (post) food: 33.3 they are still high, but have gone down 25 points in 2 months...and his Pre numbers have gone down 11.2 points!

Scouts doctor consulted with one of the surgeons at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialist, and he said that Scout can go off of the K/D Diet in 1-2 weeks, and then be weaned onto a normal puppy/dog food. He should still be monitored for any neurological symptoms. But he has been feeling and acting just like Any other puppy who was Never ill!!!

Scout does have, I believe it's 6 deciduous teeth. Per his doctor, if and when Scout is sedated again, recommend retained teeth come out. Just so the prospective adopter is aware of this. These can come out during his first dental cleaning.

Scout is house trained, kennel trained, knows sit, shake, down, no, come, walks very good on a leash...He loves to play fetch, and is very good at it, he loves All people, including children of every age, loves all dogs, does great with cats, didn't pay any attention to our parrot, he will go outside in Any Weather (just like the Mailman!), loves to be outside, and is great at the groomers.

The only problem, is trying to draw blood from him...he will struggle like nobody's business! So your vet needs a confident vet tech or lab tech to hold him. My vet has one that he will be good for. :-)
BUT... Best of All, besides being Cute, Smart, Silly, Spunky, Fearless, Feisty... SCOUT Is So ABSOLUTELY SWEET & CUDDLY With EVERYONE!!!!

Bio Update 2/10/14 : Scout is a 7.5 month old, 5.1# yorkie boy.

He had a bile acids recheck on 02/06/14, and I received the results today...nothing has changed since his last recheck, which, of coarse, was not what we hoped for. But he is bouncy and extremely alert, and very "full of life"! You would never know this little boy was once so very I'll.

Scout will need to stay on the K/D prescription dry dog food. In three months, he will have the test repeated. If it is still the same, my vet will be consulting with Scout's surgeon. Everything is normal except the bile acid results "after" Scout eats... That is still Very high.

Scout is everything great in a little Yorkie...feisty, playful, funny & super snugly! He is house-trained & smart. Gets along great with all dogs, adults & children. Scout also gets along with cats.

A fenced yard is a must. Scout does not need any other animals to be happy. He thrives on love from his people, and playing with his toys, he loves to be outside running, going for car rides, visiting...oh, does Scout LOVE visiting people! Children also make him very happy! If you have children under 10 years old, they will need to have been raised around small fragile dogs.

His Adoption Donation Fee is $700.

If you are wondering why his fee is set at $700, please allow me to explain. UYR has been rescuing dogs since 2002. Since then we have spent over $1,000,000 (yes, 1 million dollars!) caring for as many Yorkies as we can. We cover expensive vetting, specialized surgery, and life-saving procedures and we do so by relying on the donations we receive through our adoptions and the general public. Not one person in our organization makes money, we are all Yorkie lovers who volunteer our time and our homes for the breed that we love. Please consider the adoption fee as a donation towards our rescue group as a whole, not just the dog you are adopting.

Updated Bio 12/07/13: Scout is a 4.4 lb. little boy, and is 5 1/2 months old. He was born 06/19/2013. At 3 1/2 months old, it was determined that Scout had a liver shunt. On 10/25/2013 he had his surgery, and a large shunt was found. A constrictor was put in place, and has since been slowly closing, to clamp the shunt off.

At the same time, the surgeon took a liver biopsy. 2 weeks later, I was told the liver biopsy was normal. This was wonderful news, and a huge relief.

On 12/05/2013, Scout when to his vet for re-checks of his liver enzymes and liver bile acids. It has been 6 weeks since his surgery.

Scout was "fasted" for 12 hours...this is done so the doctor knows what all of his "liver values" are, before he eats.

Here is what Scout's doctor wrote in his lab report: "blood work looks good. The "post" bile acid is still elevated, but "pre" has returned to normal. Would keep him on the K/D food for a couple if more months, and then re-check a bile acids. Probably won't worry about the liver values since they are almost normal. Abx (antibiotic (amoxicillin) may be stopped when almost gone if he is acting normal."

Scout's ALK. PHOSPHATAS is still high, but this can be because the constrictor is still closing. He also still has some tummy bloating, but it has gone down considerably. His little body is still adjusting, but he is doing so great!

Scout is kennel trained & leash trained. He loves being outside running and playing. He is doing much better on house-training. He is learning to ring the bells by the door when he needs to go out. It's really cute to watch him!

Scout is super with cats, all children, all people, dogs of all sizes, if they are gentle. He should have a fenced yard because he loves to run, and he is Fast! Rain & cold does not deter him from going out.

He doesn't like the vacuum, but will eventually get used to it. He is too small to go up or down steps. House-training would be a lot easier, if I didn't have 4 steps to go down so he can go out.

He needs another playful dog or playful cat, or both. He travels well in an open crate, but sure likes to look out the windows. I believe he would do well in a doggy car seat.

He so loves to cuddle! He will sleep in my arms all night, until my alarms for his medications go off.

Scout will be staying with me until he has the bile acids re-check. It will be 2 months before this happens. I need to be certain of his health, before I decide on a Forever Home. He also still needs vaccinations before he is ready to go.

I will be taking him out to Arizona over Christmas. I will let you know if he is a good "flyer". :-)

Please continue to fill out applications, and email with questions.

UPdate 10/29/13: Scout, who is 3.1 lbs and 4 months old, had become bloated Sunday night, so to be on the safe side, I brought him to the ER. He did spend the night, but did great and was sent home the next morning.

He had some fluid build up in his abdomen, which is normal, especially for one as small and young as Scout. Also, due to diarrhea from the Lactolose, he was also dehydrated, and not up to eating.

Scout is still bloated, and it may take up to 2 weeks to go down, but he is feeling better, and all looks good at this point.

Update 10/26/13: Scout had his liver shunt surgery, and neuter on 10/25/13.

He had a large extra-hepatic shunt. This is a blood vessel that carries blood around the liver, instead of through it.

So far, Scout is doing well. The surgeon is a little concerned, because the blood vessels in his liver are small. But because Scout is young, it gives these vessels time, to be able to reaccommodate the blood that needs to flow thru them.

I will update Scout's bio in 1 - 2 weeks.

Update 10/05/13: Scout is a 3 month old, 3 lb. adorable little Yorkie boy, who needs Liver Shunt surgery. He also has a yeast infection in both his ears. Hopefully, with the prescription ear drops, this be cleared up in 14 days.

WHAT IS IT?
Liver Shunt is where the shunt blood vessels leading to the liver have bypassed the liver causing ammonia and other toxins to not be filtered out by the liver, resulting in hepatic encephalopathy or brain inflammation. It is actually a poisoning of the system leading to death unless successful medical intervention is given immediately.

Scout is on a Low Protein Diet, an Antibiotic, which for him is Amoxicillin, and also Lactulose, which is used to help keep all the bad bacteria out of him.

To understand more, please research "Liver Shunt in Yorkies". This surgery, along with all the tests, is costly. We could not help puppy's like Scout, without support from wonderful, caring individuals.

He is spunky and smart. He's already doing fairly well in the house-training area. He also knows the commands sit, come, & no.

Scout's surgery was scheduled for October 8th. But I found out, he needs to be 4 months old before this can be done.

He is now scheduled for October 25th. I will update you on how it went.

Scout's surgery is scheduled for October 25th. I will update you on how it went. Any questions, please email me.

Initial Bio 10/3/13: Scout is our latest liver shunt pup who was taken to a Wisconsin emergency vet with symptoms of this disease. Scout is just 3 months old and has been in the Emergency hospital since Oct 1. He already has more than $1000 in hospitalization fees and tests. The family who owned Scout never heard about liver shunt disease and were unprepared to spend the $4000 it will ultimately cost to help him get well. Scout has been scheduled for surgery on Oct 8. He is the sweetest boy (pictures forthcoming). We desperately need donations to help pay to help this sweetie since Scout is the 5th liver shunt dog we have helped this year.
