12/14/13: Mikey Was A “Breeder’s” Throwaway

Mikey was surrendered to a small rural animal shelter. According to the Animal Control Officer who called us for help, Mikey’s owners purchased him 2.5 months ago with the intention of breeding. The shelter intake form noted that Mikey was left outside 9 hours a day. They said he “continuously broke his chain, dug holes and jumped the fence”. Mickey is a real “people dog” and no doubt wanted to be inside with his family. However, since they could not obtain his AKC papers (for breeding) they said there was no reason for them to keep him.

We agreed to take Mikey into our Rescue and had him transferred to a vet to get neutered, heartworm tested and to update his inoculations (none of these procedures are done at the shelter). Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday we had to board Mikey for a week prior to transporting him to his foster home. The woman who owned the kennel loved him. “Mikey is just as adorable as they get for a boxer! He is a doll.” We all agree wholeheartedly!

Our volunteer picked up Mikey from the boarding kennel. They had a long drive ahead of them and he was a perfect traveling companion through six states. He stayed overnight in a hotel, and was the perfect guest, and had no accidents.
