My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Max is about 5 years old. He has made huge improvements from that scared/timid boy that came into rescue on December 27th. Once he knows you and is comfortable in the house, he demands attention and will jump up to greet you (we are working on correcting this behavior) will climb in your lap and yells if you do not pay attention to him. He is dog and cat friendly and can go to a home with other dogs or as a single dog. Max MUST have a 6 ft. fence, he has proven lately that he can really jump! Max is house trained (sometimes he need reminders that he can’t mark in the house) and crate trained. Max needs someone that can continue his socialization as he still gets very scared when he has to leave the security of his home.

There is no easy way to put this- but Max does have some medical issues. Some are probably due to the amount of neglect and lack of Vet care that he experienced during his life. Max has the following conditions:

Entropian -this means his lower eyelids fold inwards. It is not a disfiguring issue and looking at him you would never know it, however – he does have to be monitored for eye infections.

Epilepsy – Max has grand mal seizures when not properly medicated. His seizures are severe enough that he has bitten off a piece of his tongue during one. Max’s Epilepsy is being controlled by Pheno -64.8mg, every 12 hours. it is CRITICAL that he gets his meds every 12 hours … Since being regulated on his meds – Max has not had a seizure in a few months. The cost of this medication is approximately $30.00 for a three month supply.

Hypothyroidism -When Max came into rescue, his levels were almost zero. We have treated him and tested him regularly to ensure Max is on the proper dosage of medication. He is now on the dosage he needs to be on, and is doing well with the meds. He takes Soloxine .4mg every 12 hours. The average cost of this medication is approximately $10 for a one month supply.

Cardiac – When Max first came to rescue our Vet stated his heart rate was approximately 50 beats per minute instead of the normal rate of 120. After treatment for his thyroid, his heart rate has not significantly improved. NESHR had Max evaluated by the University of PA for a cardiac consult. He has been diagnosed with the following: Mitral Regurgitation – mild. Tricuspid regurge – mild, Sinus Bradycardia – slow heart rate – genetic and will not impact quality of life.

Max was cleared for his Neuter Surgery and he did wonderfully with the surgery and is recovering in his foster home. Max will need annual cardiac evaluations to catch any changes with his heart.

Please note, we are not detailing Max’s medical history to scare off potential homes. We are telling everyone because we believe in honesty and also because we want to find the perfect home for him. Max is a work in progress and needs a family that will commit to his continued medical monitoring and socialization. If you are up for that challenge, and feel that you really want to make a difference in Max’s life, please fill out an application at NESHR.org . Also, please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions on his care or needs.
