My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

RIDDICK is a very intelligent and energetic 4 year old male with natural ears and a definite love for life. He is no couch potato. He loves nothing more than to be let out to lap the house, hike through the woods, or play with other dogs. He also loves to go anywhere with us, even just to the store where he waits in the car. He’s eager to please; however, if he gets bored, he becomes a handful. Riddick also strives to be alpha, and needs strong owners that will be consistent in reminding him of his place in the family unit. All this said, with strong leadership he is a great dog. He is house trained, but not crate trained and will need a little leash retraining. He is trustworthy in the house and doesn’t chew or urinate in the house. Recently Riddick lost his female Dane companion and his owner no longer was with him every day and started to work outside of the home. He bit the 2 year old girl in the house after she hit him in the nose with a shovel and the owners believe the recent events and being hit in the face contributed to this incident. So he will not be placed with kids under 12 years old. Riddick is not for the first time Dane owner. Riddick came to MAGDRL in February 2008.

Update 3/10/08 - Riddick is settling in to his foster home very well. After a few days of getting to know his foster sister and brother (2 small dogs) and his foster parents, Riddick has decided everyone is just great. He enjoys the company of other dogs but would be just fine as the only dog in the household. He enjoys evenings on the couch with his people and a nice stroll outside after dinner. He is a bit leery of new people in the house but warms up to them after a short time. Riddick enjoys being outside when the weather is nice, like most Danes he isn’t a fan of the elements and would much rather be inside on a cold or wet day then standing outside. He is fully housebroken, does not have food aggression and shares his toys nicely. Riddick is still a bit shy and you need to move slowly with him so he doesn’t startle but the more time that goes by the more comfortable he gets.

Update 4/3/08 - Riddick is a pure Joy to have around. After having some dental work done and clearing up a nasty gum infection this big bundle of love is doing fantastic. In fact his illness may have been a major contributing factor in what appeared be prior aggressive behavior as the big guy was in quite a bit of pain. He is regaining his pep and has started to show the enthusiasm of his young age. He adores the dog park and thinks it is the best invention ever. Though Riddick doesn’t wrestle with the other dogs or try to play ball with them, he greatly enjoys walking around, getting pets from all the other dog owners and occasionally joining in a chase. It is possible that his favorite part is the ride in the car there and back. All he wants is to do is stick his nose out the window and watch everything go by. Riddick also loves his biscuits; he has already learned to sit, stay, shake, lay down and is in the process of learning roll over. When Riddick first came to us it quickly became apparent that he was not well socialized. New people and experiences really scared him. The first 20 minutes or so of anything new were always tenuous. Since he has been with us and has been introduced to many new things and people he has gotten much better. With a little encouragement and gentle guidance he now warms to people rapidly. Riddick’s time here has also shown that he does not have an overly dominant personality; he just lets you know what he likes and what he doesn’t like. You can’t be a pushover with Riddick, though a steady gentle approach is the best way to make progress with him. If you are looking for a gentle giant to snuggle with on the couch and take nice evening strolls with this is the guy for you. The occasional tug of war game with his rope toy and he will be putty in your hands, just don’t be surprised if he verbalizes his enjoyment. This big guy is a grumbler and it is one of his most endearing qualities.
