My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Rusty, he is a shih tzu with possibly bichon and schnauzer mixed in. He is a tall boy, but has such a cute face, who can resist him?

Rusty was picked up as a stray & had to be caught in a humane trap as he is afraid of humans. It is hard to believe something could have happened to this darling boy to cause that. :o( Rusty will take someone who has the patience to work some with him & let him learn to trust. After just one day, he did wiggle his tail at his foster mom, which is a BIG step for him! He LOVES to snuggle on the doggie bed, he thinks that is just the greatest thing!

Rusty is around 8 months old or so, so should learn most humans are wonderful people quickly. :o) If you have experience with shy dogs, this boy will make a wonderful baby! Rusty is crate & house trained with a doggie door leading to a securely fenced yard.

Since Rusty is afraid around quick movements or loud noises, he would not be good in a 'busy' household or with children.

Due to having treated several heartworm positive dogs recently, we DO require past proof of h/w tests & preventative given if you own a dog. We do NOT consider it proof if you have just had the h/w test done or bought preventative for the first time prior to or after putting in an application.

Out of the Area? We will gladly do a "long distance" adoption, however we do not ship our dogs. We expect you to come and pick up your dog. As all our dogs are in foster homes in different places, that would mean you would need to travel to the foster home to pick up the dog. Rusty is fostered in southeast Kansas, 6 hours from St. Louis. Family members or friends are not allowed to pick up the dog unless the adopter is with them. We will not consider an adoption out of area without a vet and groomer reference.

We do not place dogs in homes with toddlers and babies. Please read the shelter home page for placement restrictions prior to submitting an application. Our group does have a policy of only placing dogs in homes where all pets are spayed or neutered.

Our Adoption fees are based on the age of the dog and range from $350 to $200 each, and are used to pay the vet expenses. All dogs are up to date on shots, heartworm negative, spayed or neutered and any known problems are treated before they can be adopted. Last year our vet bills were $3000. higher than our adoption fees, so we are not able to adopt dogs without an adoption fee.
