My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Duke is a two year old 50 pound boxer/lab mix.  He is a good sized, bouncy boy with just a touch of goofy! He loves to play, he loves toys and he loves the guys of Canine CellMates! He was, admittedly, a bit more stoic when we first met him. He had been adopted and returned because he had pneumonia. Even though the adopter knew he had pneumonia and was sent home with meds for him, they still brought him back because he was sick. He was clearly depressed when we met him, but he's not now!! He still needs a few groceries, but he's ready for fun and a family to love him for the rest of his life! Is it you? Better get your apps in early for this super-cute boxer mix - I have a feeling a lot of folks are going to love him!

Duke is part of the Canine CellMates program at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, GA that pairs inmates up with urgent dogs from the Fulton County Animal Shelter. Dogs must pass a temperament test and then go through a 10 week training course similar to the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, established in 1989, is an American Kennel Club program to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. The evaluation consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the team fails. Test items include: Accepting a friendly stranger. Sitting politely for petting. Allowing basic grooming procedures. Walking on a loose lead. Walking through a crowd. Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place. Coming when called. Reacting appropriately to another dog. Reacting appropriately to distractions. Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner.

Duke is available for adoption immediately and will be able to go to his forever home after graduation. This fun boy is a great dog, so get those applications in now! Please fill out an adoption application at www.caninecellmates.org and email it to adopt@caninecellmates.org.
