My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jake is the puppy of this cycle at just 1 year old and 50 lbs. This sweet, energetic, young coonhound is up to date on all of his shots, is heartworm negative and neutered. Don't let his young age fool you though, this boy is very well mannered and a very fast learner. Right now he is all legs and when he runs and plays, he reminds us of a 'springy' young deer---very bouncy and silly. Jake is very social and will make make an exceptional addition to any family. Anyone looking for a second canine, Jake would be a great pooch to pick. Jake can be pre-adopted now and will be ready to go to his forever home at the beginning of June. Get your applications in for this handsome fella, he is an awesome pick!

Jake is part of the Canine CellMates program at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, GA that pairs inmates up with urgent dogs from the Fulton County Animal Shelter. Dogs must pass a temperament test and then go through a 10 week training course similar to the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, established in 1989, is an American Kennel Club program to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. The evaluation consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the team fails. Test items include: Accepting a friendly stranger. Sitting politely for petting. Allowing basic grooming procedures. Walking on a loose lead. Walking through a crowd. Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place. Coming when called. Reacting appropriately to another dog. Reacting appropriately to distractions. Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner.

Jake is available for adoption immediately and will be able to go to his forever home after graduation. This fun boy is a great dog, so get those applications in now! Please fill out an adoption application at www.caninecellmates.org and email it to adopt@caninecellmates.org.
