My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Missy the pocket Redbone Coonhound Mix! At about 37 pounds, Missy is just as sweet and cute as can be – not to mention downright beautiful. She’s about 18 months old, and this poor little girl has not had a great start to life; although, you would never know it by her happy and playful demeanor. Missy is heartworm negative, spayed, microchipped and up to date on shots. She is very energetic and a very quick learner. Just like pretty much all Redbone Coonhounds, she gets along well with people, children, and other dogs.  She genuinely loves to love and will provide a lifetime of unconditional love to the right individual or family. At her most recent adoption event, she was just a huge cuddle bug. Sitting in laps, getting picked up, and going up to every stranger for back rubs – Missy was definitely showing her love bug side! But, Missy also has an adventurous side! She would make a great running/walking/hiking companion as long as she is on leash at all times.  Coonhounds have the best nose of all the breeds therefore if they smell something they immediately will follow that scent and realize 3 miles later that they have no idea where they are and have no idea how to get home. This beauty deserves a chance at happiness, and in exchange, she’s ready to make some lucky family or individual extremely happy, too!

Missy is available for adoption immediately and will be able to go to her forever home after graduation. If interested, please fill out an adoption application at www.caninecellmates.org, and email it to adopt@caninecellmates.org

Missy is part of the Canine CellMates program at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, GA that pairs inmates up with urgent dogs from the Fulton County Animal Shelter. Dogs must pass a temperament test and then go through a 1- week training course similar to the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, established in 1989, is an American Kennel Club program to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. The evaluation consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the team fails. Test items include: Accepting a friendly stranger. Sitting politely for petting. Allowing basic grooming procedures. Walking on a loose lead. Walking through a crowd. Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place. Coming when called. Reacting appropriately to another dog. Reacting appropriately to distractions. Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the team fails.
