update!
Bruce!!! There is so much to say about Bruce and how far he has come in the 6 weeks he has been with us.He still does not like cats! Well, he may like to taste them, but NO CATS!!!! He no longer has a fear of the crate or going in it. He will walk with you as you go to the crate with a treat and walk right in for you. Of course there are times he doesn’t want to go in, but there is no longer a fight. He will also lay down in the crate after a few minutes and will only make excessive noise when we leave the house or when we are getting ready for a walk. He LOVES walks!!
We can now take ahold of his collar without him attempting to put our hand in his mouth. Yes, that was a nice way to put, without him biting us. He was not treated right previously and him doing that was only out of fear and we know that. He had a big fear of being hit when we picked him up and that is still there, but he doesn’t cower away like he did before or try to snap at our hands when we go to pet him. He has no leash, food or toy aggression. He is more likely to go steal another dogs’ toy just to lay it down two feet away from them. If you go to pet his head, he will still cower, and that too will go away in time.
He loves to play with our dogs and is very submissive if told by the other dog to “stop”. He has the typical Husky/Malamute play, which can seem aggressive for those who are not aware that those breeds both play rough. He does not have a mean bone in his body and really just wants to be loved. He would lay with you all day if you let him.
He does still get into things he shouldn’t, like a puppy, and he does not understand “drop it”. He will hold onto it because he knows he isn’t supposed to have it. We usually just pry his mouth open and get it with no problem. He used to growl and snap at us if we tried to take something from him, but he no longer does that at all. If he is kept active and busy, then he usually isn’t any issue all day long. He likes paper and soap!!! We just keep those things out of his reach completely now. We found that a tired Bruce, is a happy Bruce. He only gets into things he shouldn’t when he is bored.
He loves people and is great on walks when meeting new people or dogs. He LOVES to talk and tell you that you have stopped petting him and that he was not done getting pet. He is still working on manners, but has done amazing with learning “no” and “down”. He will counter surf if he is bored. Most of the day, if he can stay by your side, he would love that.
He really does need another dog to play with because he tends to pace when the other dogs around are being lazy. When he paces, he is bored!!! Boredom in any dog is not good. He also needs someone who has Husky experience. He has a lot of Husky traits that need consistency in dealing with and he is young, so the right person and constant work will make him even more perfect than he is now. He is high energy and needs to be able to exert that energy throughout the day.
He is great with kids as long as they know the basic rules of animals, not hitting, no tail pulling, not laying on him and not putting their hands near his mouth. He loves to be pet by kids of any age. However, he is mouthy and just likes to put hands in his mouth, he won’t bite, but just put your hand in his mouth. For a small child, that may be too rough.
