**Freddy is currently living in a foster home in Houston and is available for adoption.**
Freddy clearly had a very rough beginning, but his story quickly turned happy with a very successful rescue. A good Samaritan saw someone throw a box out of a car window onto a busy Houston freeway. She didn’t feel right about the situation and pulled off to investigate. What she found in that box was a very sickly, tiny puppy in desperate need. He was mange ridden, worm filled and seemed to also have some physical challenges. This little boy was immediately taken to the vet to begin his assessment of needs and a path to recovery, if it was possible.
Freddy’s foster mom was told he had an upper respiratory infection (that took several weeks to recovery from), he would need major surgery on his hips and sadly if he survived puppy-hood, he would probably wouldn't live to be more than a year old. Due to his physical conditions, the vet guessed that he was the product of poor breeding and might have challenges if he did survive. Freddy decided to prove all of us wrong and he has grown up and into his legs and they function perfectly fine, made it through the infections, has a gloriously shiny coat and is basically one of the happiest, goofiest puppies in our program.
He is only 6 months old at this point, but there is no sign of illness or struggle any more. His foster mom is amazed and thankful for his sweet presence every single day. He has one sign of the struggles he endured and that is some discoloration due to poor enamel formation on his adult teeth. This is common in puppies whose teeth are trying to form while they are fighting a major virus. Freddy has been virus free for over 3 months now and thus we’ve decided that he is ready to brighten the lives of a new family as he has with his foster family.
Despite the daily leg exercises, the lengthy medication regiment, the hospital stays and more, Freddy's heart of gold and determination were evident along the way. He is currently 6 months old and this black Labrador mix has been neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated. He is currently 25 pounds and we expect that he will reach 40-45 as a full grown adult. He is crate trained, still working on his leash training and fully house trained too. He is loyal as the day is long and will be a constant, silly and fun-loving companion for a family for many years to come.
Freddy’s love of life is unlike any other. He enjoys everything he encounters, toys, other dogs, both cats that he lives with, all kids and adults. He loves to be in close proximity to everyone, always touching and always part of the activity. He seems to take a bit longer than some of the other puppies when learning new tasks, possibly from the illnesses in his past, the circumstances of his existence, but despite that…he’s perfect and adored. He knows a few simple commands and continues to learn more every day from his foster family and the older dogs in the house. He is still trying to learn how to properly approach other dogs as his natural instinct is currently telling him to just walk straight up to them and paw them. Not all dogs appreciate Freddy’s “handshake” approach. He also takes a good while to get accustomed to new things in his life, such as his mom’s new leg brace and crutches. These new things seem to scare him a little and his response is to bark until they go away or he figures they won’t hurt him. His response to the broom and Swiffer is priceless however, he chases them all over the room and his tail is wagging and he is hopping up and down the whole time. He is teaching us a few things too with his endless love and devotion. We think he understands that his foster mom never gave up on him, even in the hardest times.
This amazing boy is a trooper and is ready to join his very own family. He is neutered, current on his vaccinations, microchipped and looking for a loving, active, playful family.
