My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

FRECKLES is a 5 year old harlequin female Great Dane. She came to the rescue, along with 9 other Danes, when their owner became ill. Freckles is an exceptionally sweet girl, who lives to be near her owner. She tends to follow us from room to room, laying down quietly nearby, until we get up again. She's a calm girl who rarely barks. Freckles doesn't pull much on her leash, but she does tend to weave back and forth in front of you. She knows sit, but little else - including her name. Freckles is well behaved in her crate and is completely house trained if she has access to a doggie door. Without a doggie door, she will probably need to be taught how to ask to go outside. Freckles is currently living with two 7 year old Danes (one male and one female) and gets along well with both, though she doesn't interact much with them. Having delivered pups recently, she tends to be a bit wary of other dogs. Considering she has lived with several other Great Danes, we expect her to do well with other large dogs, as long as she is introduced slowly. Small dogs are completely unknown at this time. We do not know how Freckles is with kids or cats. Freckles only has one bad trait - she loves to eat socks! If their in the hamper, she won't bother them, but if she finds one on the floor, she considers it hers. Luckily, she has always thrown then back up again before they could cause her any problem. Freckles is currently 110lbs, but could stand to gain another 10lbs. She needs to be spayed before she can be adopted. Freckles came to MAGDRL in April 2008.

Update 7/13/08 - Now that Freckles is done being a mother, she's learning to be a pet. She was spayed last week, and came through surgery wonderfully. She's learning to play and can even do a mini-zoomie now, but her play always ends in the perfect sit - as if she's asking if it was OK that she went a little crazy. Freckles had been perfectly potty trained when she had access to the doggie door, but when the dog door was cut off (to prevent the puppies from escaping) she had a really hard time with it. We had to go back to the basics of potty training. She's finally getting the hang of it though. You still have to walk her to the potty area, but then if you ignore her she'll get down to business. While she's not an enthusiastic eater, she has finally gotten back to a normal weight and she looks great! We're starting to introduce her to more people and as long as she's away from the house, she does terrific. She's still a little cautious around the house though, but we think that's because there are still a few puppies here. Once the remaining puppies have gone to their new homes, we'll start having more friendly strangers come into the home, so we can get a better assessment. She doesn't act nervous around any of the children that she's been around, but we haven't allowed her to interact with them yet. We hope to have a better idea of how she is with kids in the next two weeks.
