My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Poppy was found wondering the streets of Kansas for food and water. It was very obvious by her looks that she had just had a litter of puppies. A very kind woman followed her until Poppy lead her back to all her puppies. At this point they were only 5 days old and in pretty bad shape since poor Poppy was so skinny and struggling so much. The woman knew she could not leave Poppy and her 9 puppies there, especially since it was getting colder and colder, but she could not take them home with her because she lived in an apartment that did not allow dogs, let alone 10, so she did what she had to do, and brought them to the local shelter. The shelter that she brought the family to was so low on funds that they were not going to be able to take care of the family properly, so they asked our rescue if we could take them. Two days later they were transported up to Boulder, CO. to get healthy and strong in a foster home, and then find their forever homes. It has now been 5 1/2 weeks since they were transported up here and on the 11th of December, everybody should be able to go into their forever homes, including Poppy.
Poppy has been such an incredible mom. When she came in she weighed 16lbs, and she should really weigh about 25lbs. Even with all her own health issues at the time, she still wanted to be with her pups all the time and take great care of them. After about three weeks we realized that the pups were going incredibly fast and that the dad must have been a lot bigger than her (40lbs - ish). The puppies were literally sucking the life out of her. Even though pups are not supposed to be weaned at such an early age we had no choice or else all of the pups and mom would not have made it. It has now been 5 weeks and the pups are almost completely dependent on puppy food and formula and Poppy is a completely different dog.
Since Poppy has been gaining back her energy her true personality is coming out and it is one of the sweetest and cutest personalities we have seen in a while. She has NEVER made a peep when she is in her crate (she is completely crate trained). When her foster comes home from work and lets her out she literally prances and dances while her whole butt wiggles with excitement. She then goes straight to the back door to go potty. Poppy is pretty much potty trained unless left alone for many hours at a time, so the crate would be best while gone, but when someone is home she will actually go to the back door and let you know she needs to go out. Poppy did not like the snow and cold at first and it was a little difficult to get her to go out, but now she actually likes it and likes running around and doing laps in the back yard.
Poppy is truly a puppy at heart. She loves squeeky toys and loves to hoard them in her bed and chew on them. She does not chew on anything other than her toys and bones, and does not mess anything up in the house.
Right now Poppy is a pretty mellow dog and more than anything just wants to be held like a baby and have her tummy rubbed. She will just fall asleep on your chest if you let her. Poppy does get along with other dogs very well, unless they are going for her puppies, which is very understandable for a Mama. She just warns other dogs that they are her pups and to stay away. She has tried to play with the fosters dogs a couple times, but the fosters dogs are not very interested, but she may want to play with a dog in her forever home. Poppy also loves to chase squirrels in the back yard with the other dogs. She is also NOT a barker unless the other dogs in the house are barking.
We did have a DNA test done on her and it said she is a Miniature Poodle/Terrier/Australian Cattle dog mix, which actually makes sense. She does not shed on the top of her head at all and has very curly poodle hair. She has big ears that sometimes stick up and sometimes are down like a Terrier or Australian Cattle dog. Her fur on her back and tail is more wiry, but does shed. We do not want people to think that she does not shed because she has poodle in her, because she does shed a good amount, so she would need a home with someone that does not care about that. She does love being brushed though, so it is easy to contain for the most part.
Poppy would do well in any type of home. She is fine with kids, but may bark a little at first if they approach her quickly. and startle her. She does great with dogs, and how she acts around cats in unknown. She would do fine with an older couple who wants a snuggle bug lap dog, or with someone who likes to go for long walks and take their dogs places. She loves walks and can go for a long time, we believe that she would even be a great hiking dog once she has completely recovered from having the 9 pups.
