My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

When it comes to choosing a dog companion, many potential adopters don't realize how great older dogs are. They may sleep more and their hearing and/or eyesight may not be as keen as it used to be but the gratitude and instant unconditional love you get from an older rescued dog is immeasurable by the clock or the calendar. Whitey with his big trusting eyes and soft black and white coat is a senior citizen, born 04/05/2006. Too old you say?!! No dog is ever too old to give you unlimited trust and love, to anticipate your footfall and welcome you home with wagging tail, to quietly sit by your side and listen to your words of wisdom or just companionably enjoy your favorite book or TV show. At 25 pounds he is a bit overweight but we have him on a light dog food diet. From puppy hood, Whitey brought sunshine and purpose into the life of an elderly gentleman who loved him dearly and gladly cared for his every need. Sadly, when his companion died the family was unable to continue providing for him so they contacted the Safehouse and Whitey arrived here on 01/16/2016. Totally housetrained, well mannered, quiet and calm; he can romp like a puppy but not all the time. Sweet gentle Whitey is quiet, friendly and affectionate, a mellow, relaxed, older Shih Tzu who has given love and devotion all his life and wants nothing more than to be with you. He is accustomed to living with a family so he comes with some basic training; he knows what “no” means and when you call him . . . . HE COMES!! A perfect companion for an older person or couple; Whitey does not have the patience needed to deal with young children, would prefer to be an only dog and seems to ignore cats. Whitey is looking for simple accommodations, a quiet home with a warm bed, regular meals, a walk around the block or through an open-air shopping center, an occasional car ride, a warm sun spot for napping (pillow optional), a lap to snuggle in and loving arms to hold him and let him know he is home once again. The average life expectancy of the Shih Tzu is 14-16 years; every minute will be filled with shared joy and devotion and you will have the pleasure of knowing you made this gentle loving companion’s golden years truly golden. Whitey is neutered, microchipped, current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and he has had a complete physical and dental. His adoption fee is $200.
